About Le Vieux Comptoir
Le Vieux Comptoir is a French restaurant in Marylebone, London, on Moxon St, and it doubles as a wine shop. The menu follows the French bistro classics, with escargots and duck confit among the savoury plates. For dessert, the crème brûlée is flambéed tableside with Armagnac, so the finishing step happens in front of the diners. The extensive wine list runs to Champagne and Sancerre. The restaurant spreads across several different rooms. It opens Tuesday to Saturday and closes on Sundays and Mondays. Visitors reach the entrance by the stairs beside the ground-level door.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the wine list, praising a rosé Champagne and a Sancerre, a rich collection, and bottles called underpriced for the quality. Close behind are the French classics: escargots, French onion soup, a chicory and pear salad, duck confit and a quiche one reviewer found stunning. Desserts draw praise too, especially a crème brûlée flambéed tableside with Armagnac and a tarte tatin. Service splits sharply. Several describe friendly, welcoming staff and a host who sat down to take the order, while one calls the service French and not great. The caveats are specific. Another reviewer found the courgette quiche muted in flavour and quick to cool, and a birthday party reported a cold "medium" beef onglet, a door greeter who misread the booking name and no help with coats. Two reviewers describe a nearly empty room, one of them the only other diners on a Saturday evening, and that diner's meal was comped.

“This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been in. The food was amazing and the wine was underpriced for the quality. An amazing experience. If you are in london you have missed out if you don’t try this place. Authentic French cuisine in an unassuming atmosphere.”

“I have been here a few times now and hopefully I can render a very honest review of the place. Lorenzo is an amazing host, and the wine collection is rich and full of great options. Food is good and affordable, which does not tend to be the case for most French restaurants abroad. The restaurant seats are nice, with different rooms where the atmosphere is always smooth.”

“Le Vieux Comptoir occupies a quietly tucked-away spot off Marylebone High Street, and on a weekday early evening it has the feel of a place still finding its audience. We arrived at six and were comfortably seated by attentive, genuinely warm staff — the service throughout was the evening's most consistent pleasure. The menu leaned towards French bistro classics, and we both chose the courgette quiche with salad. The portion was generously sized, which one appreciates, but the flavour was disappointingly muted. It arrived at the table piping hot and cooled with unusual speed, which did little to suggest it had been prepared to order. I left a good deal of mine untouched. Happily, the desserts redeemed the kitchen's reputation. A crème brûlée, flambéed tableside with Armagnac, was exactly what it should be — richly caramelised and properly theatrical. My companion's tarte tatin was equally well received. The coffee, it must be said, did not quite match these heights. Where Le Vieux Comptoir truly distinguishes itself is the wine list, which is exceptional. We began with a glass of rosé Champagne apiece before moving on to a very fine Sancerre — the kind of list that rewards those who take the time to explore it. The bill came to £155 for two, which reflects those choices rather than the food alone. The room itself is a little dim, and on the evening we visited it was notably quiet, though we were on the early side. It lacks a certain warmth of atmosphere that the staff themselves more than compensate for. With some attention to the cooking, this could be a very good neighbourhood restaurant. As it stands, it is a pleasant, if uneven, experience, carried largely by its cellar, its crème brûlée, and its people.”

“Went for a birthday dinner. The gentleman at door could not find our booking and asked twice how many people we booked for when there was clear two of us, turned out he read the name wrong. No one helped us with our coats, just stood there and watched us do it ourselves, same when leaving, no one said thanks or bye to us after spending £100 for 2 dishes. Very prompt with service charge tho. Attached pic is for a “medium” beef onglet, came cold as well.”

“Le Vieux Comptoir is a lovely spot if you’re craving authentic French cuisine in a cosy atmosphere. The escargots were delicious and perfectly garlicky, and the warm salad was fresh and full of flavour. The vibe is intimate and charming, with a classic French bistro feel that makes you feel like you’re in Paris for the evening. Service was friendly and attentive, adding to the overall great experience. Highly recommended for a genuine taste of France!”
