About Gilgamesh
Gilgamesh is a pan-Asian restaurant at 4a Upper St Martin's Lane in Covent Garden, London, themed around the ancient Gilgamesh epic. Copper panels depicting battle scenes line the interior, and a basement level sits below the main floor. The menu is built around small plates and starters that draw on China, Japan and Southeast Asia, including wagyu tacos, tuna tartare and duck spring rolls. Sushi, Thai green curry and beef rendang also feature. A cocktail and wine list runs alongside the food. The room is quieter earlier in the day and turns livelier later on, with DJs playing both upstairs and downstairs in the evening.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the wagyu tacos, whose fruity element worked for one reviewer, though another found them cold. Close behind are the tuna tartare with crispy rice bites, prawn tempura, duck spring rolls and har gau prawn dumplings, and several say the starters outshine the mains. Reviewers also praise the sushi, the beef tataki, the miso aubergine and a lychee and cherry cocktail. The copper-panelled decor and the DJs draw praise, though one notes the mood shifts from quiet early on to a party in the evening. The caveats centre on price and the mains. Several call it pricey, mention the automatic 15% service charge, and say discounts through apps or a 50% offer made it better value. Thai green curry and Singaporean noodles were called average, and one reviewer found the chicken karaage tasteless. That reviewer was seated beside a speaker and asked the waitress three times before the music was addressed. Staff are often described as friendly and attentive, and one diner says the staff went above and beyond.

“Great food, fast and friendly service. Atmosphere changes dramatically in evening when the party starts, so choose wisely! Both are fun but not if you're expecting the other, as quiet conversations will be easy to have in the quiet tines but hard during the party.”

“Starters are brilliant. Decor is interesting . Food especially the main course could with some variety . They do make it up with the service though . Shaking beef, spring rolls. Nigiri and prawn tempura were brilliant . Thai curry and and Singaporean noodles were strictly average . Just stick to their starters .”

“We had a nice experience here. The har gau prawn dumplings, the beef slices with caviar, and beef rendang curry were all very tasty. The lychee and cherry cocktail I had was delicious (very sweet). The sushi wasn't bad but it wasn't at the same standard as the rest of the food, which is what made this restaurant drop just below 5 stars for me. We used an app called eat club which got us a 30% discount, which meant the food had good value for money especially for covent garden. However, at full price I think only some of the dishes present good value for money. The service was friendly and attentive, and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere. We went at 5:00 on a Wednesday so the music was quite quiet which suited us perfectly.”

“Always wanted to visit Gilgamesh when it was in Camden Market. I had heard good things about it and my expectations were therefore quite high. We were seated downstairs, in the basement, next to a speaker, which made it almost impossible to hear my friends, who were sitting opposite. We asked either to move a different table or if they could turn the music down. After asking the waitress at least three times, they finally acquiesced. They specialise in fusion style cuisine, which I have to say was quite average. We selected a number of small plate starters. The chicken Karaage was completely tasteless and overpriced at £ 13.00. The Thai Green curry was well spiced, but nothing special. I didn’t like the fact that they told us twice, that we needed to vacate the table in fifteen minutes, as it was reserved and we needed to leave. Overall, a very average meal. However, you’re paying for the Covent Garden location and also a 15% Service Charge which they automatically add onto the bill.”

“Came here using the first table app and had a wonderful time! The food was all really delicious and the service was impeccable. We ordered 7 dishes from the small plates and starters, couple of standouts for me were the duck and watermelon salad, the miso aubergine, and the beef tataki. But the dumplings, tuna tartar, and chicken thighs were also great! 7 plates, plus one dessert, and a couple of soft drinks came to £100 inc tip, so about £50 each, including the discount. I’d definitely recommend using the app first table app! The location is also so lovely, very spacious, with beautiful decor and ambience, the perfect spot for an occasion.”
