About The Walnut Tree

The Walnut Tree is a Wetherspoon pub at 857-861 High Rd in Leytonstone, London, where tea and Lavazza coffee come with free refills all day, every day. Breakfast is served until noon, and porridge is on the menu alongside deep-fried pub food such as fish and chips. The large bar area is arranged around a long servery in the centre. High and low tables fill the front, and a few booths at the back are set aside for diners. Dark wood panelling, historical photos and a distinctive carpet make up the decor. The cask ales include real ales such as Nethergate white stout and Purity Free Rein, and the drinks range also covers craft beers and gins. The pub is open daily. It sits on the high street, close to the Central line, bus stops and a Tesco.

Customer Review Summary

Low prices anchor the praise for this Leytonstone pub, with reviewers repeatedly pointing to cheap pints, among them Carlsberg, Guinness and Purity Free Rein. Real ales get close attention too, and one drinker singles out Nethergate white stout. Food is described as quick, hot and in large portions, with fish and chips mentioned, and one reviewer expected a microwave tub of porridge but found it spot on. Unlimited coffee also gets a mention. Several call the staff friendly, one even says they feel like family, while another finds them not in your face friendly but perfectly nice once conversation starts. The atmosphere is called buzzy and upbeat, and the big pub has plenty of seating and a small garden. The one serious complaint comes from a reviewer celebrating a surprise for their parents, who says a staff member rudely asked the group to be quiet, kept being rude after an apology, and was rude again when they bought a Coke. A regular who made this their local adds that the Guinness is cheaper on Mondays.

“I’m honestly really disappointed with the way we were treated by one particular member of staff today. We had planned a lovely surprise for my parents, and they were so happy and excited. Unfortunately, the attitude of one member of staff completely put a dampener on what should have been a really special experience. She asked us to be quiet in a very rude and unpleasant manner. I apologised straight away, even though I didn’t feel I had done anything wrong, but instead of accepting my apology, she continued to speak to me rudely. Later on, I went to buy a Coke. I was polite, respectful and didn’t have an attitude towards her whatsoever, yet she was rude to me again. At that point, it genuinely felt like she had a problem with us for no reason. I understand that staff can have difficult days, but customers should not be made to feel uncomfortable or spoken to disrespectfully because of someone else’s mood. Her attitude and negative energy completely changed the atmosphere for us and took away from what was supposed to be a lovely occasion. What makes it even more disappointing is that the rest of the experience was nice, which is why it’s such a shame that one member of staff could have such a negative impact on the whole visit. I’m very upset about how we were treated and I really hope this is taken seriously and addressed, because no customer should leave feeling the way we did.”

“This is one of my favourite Wetherspoons near to me. It's what I'd what I'd call a drinkers' pub, which means you don't get held up at the bar by people ordering complicated meal combinations and silly cocktails. The staff don't seem to be in your face friendly but if you make some conversation with them they're perfectly nice. And they always seem to have at least one truly excellent real ale. On my visit yesterday I had several glasses of Nethergate white stout, which I would contend is one of humanity's finest inventions 🙂”

“🚇 Leytonstone 🍺 £2.87 Carlsberg The Walnut Tree is located at the top end of the high street in Leytonstone, East London. The nearest Tube is Leytonstone. This pub opened as a Wetherspoon’s in 1997. It was created by converting an existing building that had previously housed a gymnasium, carpet retailers, and a co-op. The name “The Walnut Tree” comes from Walnut Tree House (later Essex Hall), dating to around 1500; a lease in 1813 required the tenant to preserve a large walnut tree, which gave the building — and later the pub — its name. There is a large bar area and a long, centrally located servery. In front of the servery is a raised section, while the back is set aside for diners with a few booths; at the front, there is a mixture of high and low tables. The decor is typically traditional for a Spoons, with white walls, dark wood panelling, historical photos, and a fairly jazzy carpet. There is an outside space to the side of the pub. The beer selection offers a lineup of well-known brands, along with a good choice of cask ales. I opted for a Carlsberg, my pint was great, price point was tremendous at under three quid. Food-wise, it’s a veritable smorgasbord of deep-fried cuisine, which is also very reasonably priced; fish and chips cost £13.52 with an alcoholic beverage included. I arrived just after 11am on a mild Saturday morning in January. The pub was very busy as it just had a couple of coach loads of Port Vale fans in who were off to the match at Leyton Orient . I met up with my mate Neil as the starting point for a crawl around the area. The atmosphere was buzzy and upbeat which was great. The service was good, the team behind the ramp had everything under control. I am a big fan of Wetherspoons, especially for the fact they offer an affordable price point in a world of six, seven and eight pound pints. This was my second visit here, my first being Christmas Day with my Daughter a few years back. I enjoyed both visits, didn’t blow my socks off but I suppose it’s not meant too. Be sure to pay a visit if you’re in the area. 📅 31st January 2026”

“Great atmosphere, delicious food, and most importantly — very affordable prices. The drinks were also cheap. Definitely a nice place to visit!”

“Perfect place in Leyton and other locations too. Always good service and food, good prices for drinks too. Funfact: every wetherspoon has its own custom carpeting design, none of the over 800 wetherspoons has the same carpet.”
