About The Sydney Arms

The Sydney Arms is an independent pub on Sydney St in London, laid out as a one-bar traditional pub with a centrally located servery and a snug at the back. Horse racing runs on screens around the bar, and jockey silks and racecourse steward passes cover the walls, so racegoers can follow a card while they drink. The kitchen serves fish and chips and a steak sandwich, and Guinness is on tap beside two cask ales. Dogs are welcome, so regulars can bring them along.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the friendly, attentive staff and the proprietor, with several describing a warm, welcoming atmosphere that stays relaxed rather than overcrowded. The food earns steady praise too, led by the fish and chips, which one diner calls the best in London, with crispy chips even under the fish and fresh fish. Close behind are a steak sandwich described as perfectly cooked, and a shared order of steak tacos done medium rare, chicken wings in bbq sauce and crispy sweet potato fries. One reviewer says the Guinness is pulled well, and another praises the wine list. A group of football supporters found the pub welcoming before a match, and others mention the outdoor area and the open front. Reviewers describe a proper local pub rather than a gastro, with sport on screens. On the downside, one reviewer found the beer expensive and disliked the service charge added to the bill, and another noted the London Pride was off on a busy night.

“Popped in here by chance. Very friendly service. We decided to have a little snack to keep us going and we were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. We ordered the steak tacos, chicken wings and sweet potato fries to share. The fries were lovely and crispy, tacos were very tasty and the steak tacos were cooked perfectly just like we asked (medium rare) and the chicken wings were really good too, lovely bbq sauce and very moreish! Lawrence was very attentive and looked after us well. Would definitely come back and highly recommend popping in for a visit if you're in the area.”

“Very busy, staff were good and cooked well. London pride was off, which was a shame. Watched the eng v drc game. Atmosphere was great”

“One of the best pubs in the area, and definitely my favourite. One of the main reasons is that, unlike many other pubs nearby, it never feels overwhelmingly crowded, and the crowd tends to be younger. When the weather is nice, the outdoor area is especially enjoyable. The staff are friendly, attentive, and efficient, and they do their best to serve your drinks as quickly as possible from the bar. Overall, it’s a great place to relax and enjoy a drink with friends.”
