About Famous Cock Tavern

Famous Cock Tavern is a pub in London at 259 Upper St, open daily. Booths with their own screens let a table follow F1 or Arsenal games, and more screens around the bar show football and other sports. The Arsenal Guinness is poured with the print directly on the pint, and Asahi is on tap. The food menu includes 1kg Korean wings. Bottomless brunch comes with cocktails, and staff come round regularly to top up drinks. Highbury and Islington station is close by, and a bouncer at the door checks bags.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for sport on the booths with their own screens, used for Arsenal games and the F1, with one noting the atmosphere was great when Arsenal won. Bottomless brunch comes close behind, with diners describing food and cocktails that kept coming and staff who circled regularly to top up glasses. Staff are called friendly, and the 1kg Korean wings and Asahi on tap get specific praise. Two reviewers call the pints steep, and one finds the bar a little touristy. Smaller complaints include fries advertised as skin-on arriving without skin, a flat white served piping hot, and no cutlery or napkins with food. One reviewer describes an Arsenal parade day with a late opening, disorganised staff and a bread shortage that left some with a bun and a single sausage. Another, who is British Indian, reports that their bag was the only one checked at the door and that a bouncer and the manager were rude, while saying they cannot be sure why. One diner still singled out the Arsenal Guinness with the print on the pint.

“This is the only pub I’ve came across that sells my favourite beer on tap (asahi), it was £8 definitely steep but worth it since it was the best pint I’ve ever had”

“Visited The Famous Cock during the Arsenal parade, so we fully expected it to be busy and a bit manic. They opened late due to staffing issues, which was frustrating at first, but understandable given how packed the area was. Once inside, the start was pure chaos. Staff seemed unsure what they were doing and it didn’t feel like anyone was really pulling things together as a team. Food was also wildly inconsistent, mainly due to a lack of bread. Some of us ended up with a burger bun and one sausage, while others had proper bread and more than one sausage, so it did feel a bit all over the place. Then Ellie appeared and genuinely steered the ship back on course. She apologised for the issues, had a great personality, and made a massive difference to the entire experience. If it wasn’t for Ellie, this would probably be a three star review at best. Peak Ellie energy was when security tried not to let her back into the pub, which gave us all a laugh. For such a massive event day, despite the issues, Ellie made sure it still ended up being an enjoyable experience. She deserves full credit for pulling things back and making the visit feel fun rather than just chaotic. The icing on the cake was the Arsenal Guinness with the print directly on the pint. I am usually very much a “no logo on the foam” guy, but for this one I was fully in. A chaotic start, but Ellie saved it. Would definitely give it another go on a normal day.”

“Visited with family recently, including my niece who uses a wheelchair, and unfortunately the experience was disappointing from the moment we arrived. The bouncer asked to “take” my bag, which I genuinely misunderstood. He later explained that he meant he wanted to check my bag, but rather than clarifying politely, he became quite rude and dismissive. What made the situation particularly uncomfortable was that my bag appeared to be the only one checked. I am British Indian and the rest of my family are white, and I did not notice any other bags being searched while we were entering. I cannot say for certain why my bag was singled out, but it left me feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome before I had even stepped inside. We could clearly see that the pub was busy, and my sister-in-law was actually speaking to a member of the bar staff to ask for recommendations for nearby pubs that might have space for a group of our size. At no point were we arguing about whether we could stay or demanding a table. Despite this, the same bouncer appeared to raise concerns about us standing near the entrance, even though we were simply waiting while my sister-in-law spoke to staff and several members of our family were already inside. Shortly afterwards, the manager approached us and immediately announced, “I’m the manager.” My response was simply, “Okay.” He then repeatedly told us that the pub was fully booked. We already knew that and had accepted it, which was precisely why my sister-in-law was asking staff for recommendations elsewhere. Rather than listening to what we were actually saying, the manager seemed determined to have a confrontation that simply wasn’t necessary. The whole interaction felt unnecessarily hostile and unwelcoming. I appreciate that pubs get busy and staff have a difficult job to do, but basic courtesy costs nothing. Instead of being treated like customers looking for advice, we were made to feel like a problem. A very disappointing experience that left a poor impression of what is otherwise a well-known London pub.”
