About Big Easy Bar.B.Q & Crabshack - Covent Garden

Big Easy Bar.B.Q & Crabshack - Covent Garden is a barbecue restaurant at 12 Maiden Ln in London, set in a former power station spread across three levels. An open kitchen turns out hickory-smoked meats, so the cooking is in view from the dining room. The Texas-style menu centres on brisket and also includes a seafood boil, and lobster appears in several forms, including lobster mac 'n' cheese. Brunch is a package with bottomless prosecco for a set time, and an express lunch menu runs alongside it. A set menu pairs a main with a drink, with a starter or dessert available as an add-on. Tables are taken by reservation, and a large bar sits within the venue. Live music is played during some visits.

Customer Review Summary

Lobster is what reviewers raise most, and opinion splits on it: one diner calls the half lobster deluxe upgrade sweet and tender, a child enjoyed the lobster in the seafood boil, while others found the whole lobster meal deal small and the lobster mac n cheese nearly lobster-free. Brisket, voodoo chicken wings, stuffed jalapeño peppers, the smokehouse burger and thick shakes also draw praise, and the live music, large bar and friendly servers come up repeatedly in the positive reviews. Some call the lunch menu with a drink good value. Slow service is the main complaint. One party was seated late and could not find a waiter during a bottomless brunch, and another received the crab combo and a ribeye well after arriving, the ribeye cooked past medium rare and the crab sauce separated under what looked like a heat lamp. Several note higher prices and smaller portions than before, with a steak described as overdone and barely warm. One reviewer found the calamari underwhelming, while another liked it crispy. A recurring detail is food arriving lukewarm.

“I've always wanted to try a Texas style BBQ, looked around and this one seemed to be popular and authentic. The place had a good atmosphere, though found it a bit hard to read the menu due to the lighting. Ordered my drink and it was lovely and very refreshing. Next I ordered my food and to my surprise, it came out far quicker than I thought it would. I imagine for some, this is heavenly but for me it was a bit too sickly sweet and didn't taste as flavoursome as I thought it would. The service was very good though, they seemed to be well organised despite being busy.”

“Great location, brilliant music and a fantastic variety of food. The brisket was awesome tender, decent flavour and sides where a good fit. The atmosphere was lively and the live music was very in theme loved it. I would definitely recommend Big Easy Covent Garden and would happily visit again.”

“The food was so good here super good value as the have a menue for a main meal and a drink for 11 pounds you can also add a desert or a starter for 5 pounds extra. Staff was also very attentive and kind. Music was good lighting too”

“Arrived on time for a 5:30pm reservation, from that point the entire evening was an exercise in extreme patience. Short version is that we did not receive our food until 6:29pm (timestamped from camera). We did not cause any of the delay, we ordered as soon as our server came. They did not seem to be short staffed, there were a number of staff milling about and there were a lot of empty tables. The drinks were good, the slushi pina coloda had a great flavor. Appetizer calamari was tasty but a very small portion relative to the cost. Ordered the Crab Combo, which when it eventually arrived an hour later had clearly been sitting under a heat lamp for quite a while. The sauce was separated and as you can see in the picture a dry crust had formed on it over the crab legs. My wife had a ribeye ordered medium rare which came out, again an hour later, at medium well. I suspect it was also the victim of sitting under a heat lamp which resulted in it continuing past medium rare. Overall it made for a very disappointing evening. We had to rush and eat what we could because we had tickets to show afterwards. Even if it was the most amazing food I've ever had (it wasn't), I would still never go back to a place that just left us sitting there for so long.”

“We loved this place. The servers were so kind and the atmosphere was great! They had live music while we were there and we could still talk while they were playing. The food was awesome and very reasonable in price. Large bar, lots of options. Great spot!”
