About Castro's Cafeteria Liverpool
Castro's Cafeteria Liverpool is a Canarian-style Spanish sandwich shop in Liverpool, at 8A Hackins Hey. The sandwiches are bocadillos on a crusty roll, and the Mechada, a beef brisket filling, comes with a homemade hot sauce made in house to add as you like. Barraquitos, a Tenerife-style coffee, are served alongside Canarian-style tapas, and papas con mojo are on offer as a side. Basque cheesecake comes blueberry or plain. Orders are made in an open kitchen in view of the counter. The shop opens Tuesday to Saturday and is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
The Mechada, a beef brisket sandwich, is what most reviewers return for, with several saying the brisket melts in the mouth and the house-made hot sauce adds a spice kick without overpowering it. Close behind are the Jamon ham and cheese sandwich, the serranito with pork loin, and a chicken sandwich, with portions described as generous and big enough to share. Reviewers also single out the blueberry basque cheesecake, the iced peach tea, and barraquitos that visitors compare to the ones in Tenerife, plus fries and papas with mojo sauce. The owners and staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, and one reviewer describes regulars who treat the team like family. A few mention watching orders come together in the open kitchen. One reviewer notes a wait before being served. One diner was handed a fork in case any stuffing fell out, and another was given free shots.

“Such a great spot! The owners are warm and friendly, and the food is top notch. I got the Mike - it was incredible and a massive portion. I also appreciated that they gave me a fork, in case any stuffing fell out. Only sad that I’m not in Liverpool more often to try some of their other sandwiches and tapas. 10/10”

“Amaaaaazing! We go to Tenerife yearly and have grown very fond of Barraquitos, so much so I stumbled across Castros awhile ago when searching for Barraquitos in the UK. It's taken us awhile but we finally made a trip over to Liverpool and of course a visit to Castros was needed! What was originally intended to just be a quick pit stop for a Barraquito, we ended up staying for a couple (as they were just like the good ones in Tenerife!) and some food and I am so glad we did!! Not only were the Barraquitos spot on, the food was delicious. My son and I shared the pollo bocadillo, my husband had an arepa, and we got a side of papas con mojo - it was just like being back in Tenerife 👌🏻 portion sizes are decent too, definitely enough to share. Would highly recommend this place for lunch as not only was the food fab, but the owners were lovely too - super friendly and chatty, and nice to speak a little Spanish. Will definitely be returning next time we're in Liverpool! Muchas gracias 💛”

“Sass’ Review Ive seen this place so many times when I stop off in Hole in the wall, ive read the reviews. I’ve heard people go on about it, so I figured it was time to dive in. The wait was a while but it just built up the anticipation. The vibes were great, boss music and people. I ordered the Jamon, to put it in basic terms, it’s the best ham and cheese sarnie ive had. It was weirdly even better when I saved half and had it cold. Also grabbed one of the plain basque cheese cakes which were divine. The thing that stole the show for me though was the iced peach tea, YESSSSS!!!! Rise up iced tea fans cos this one is genuinely the best I’ve ever had. This is coming from someone who hates Lipton. All in all for two heavy big tasty sarnies, a cheesecake to share and 2 bottles of iced peach tea for like £33 doesnt work out terrible, especially for the quality and supporting somewhere independent. Reece’s Review One of the best sandwiches ive ever had and I can definitely say that the hype is true , taking pride and care into making each bite better than the last and by the time your finished , it leaves you satisfied and glad that you went there for breakfast, lunch , dinner etc. If you want a proper delicious sandwich in your spare time Castros is the way to go 💪🏻 If you haven’t gone yet and you’re flicking through reviews like we were in the past STOP and just GO!”

“What’s not to like about this place? The staff was so welcoming and friendly. The beer was cold and crisp. And the sandwiches were among the best II’ve ever had. We were in Liverpool for 3 days and ate there twice. Can’t recommend this place enough. Thanks for the free shots and good vibes!”
