About DEREK’S Coffee & Sandwiches

DEREK'S Coffee & Sandwiches is a New York-style sandwich shop at 44 Berry St in Liverpool. The menu is short and built around sandwiches, with the Reuben and The Grinder as the subs to look for, and coffee is served alongside them. Most orders go out as takeaway, and the small seating area inside has only a few seats. A queue forms at busy times, especially around lunchtime. The kitchen also makes breakfast sandwiches, including a sausage, egg and cheese.

Customer Review Summary

Sandwiches draw most reviewers, with the Reuben named most often, the Grinder close behind, and the soup and grilled cheese also called exceptional. Diners describe filling, tasty sandwiches made with high quality ingredients, plus a flat white that is smooth and not overly sour. One visitor singles out the honey chicken fries as the star, with the truffle tater tots also praised. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and helpful. The caveats are portion against price and space. One reviewer found a pastrami sandwich small and really salty for what was paid, and another called the breakfast sausage sandwiches small portions from a limited menu, though the cooking was high quality. Seating is only a few spots inside, a long queue was reported, and several suggest taking away when it is busy. One reviewer advises two people to order different sandwiches and split them, and found a shared sandwich a bargain.

“Highly recommended. Prices around £9 for the sandwiches, but still good value for money. Good size sandwiches with plenty of filling. Very high quality and really tasty. 'The Grinder', 'Reubenstein' and the 'Soup and Grilled Cheese' are exceptional. Was about 10 minutes from order to getting my food, which was pretty good as they are a popular place at lunchtimes. Well worth a visit.”

“Went here on Monday, I had seen the Only Scrans review on YouTube. My expectations were high, and I was not disappointed. Possibly one of the best sandwiches I have ever had full stop. I had the Grindr and my partner had the Reubens. They were both amazing, so many flavours to savour and substantial in size. The staff were friendly and very helpful, they were genuinely passionate about their food.”

“One of the nicest experiences in Liverpool, the food is amazing, high quality and fresh. The service is immaculate and the chef is an absolute vibe. The best food spot in Liverpool, highly recommend! Thank you!”

“Long awaited trip here after hearing such great things. Bloke who serves me was friendly and efficient, food also came quickly barely waited and it seemed relatively busy. Food was excellent and if you go with 2 people make sure you get 2 different ones and share. Nearly £10 felt steep for a sandwich but it’s very filling and tasty so can’t complain and if you share the sandwich with someone like I did it’s a bargain for a bunch bite. There is a small seating area so you can sit down (if you’re lucky) but don’t count on it.”

“First time visit to this store, parking is single or double yellows to start with, so only option is pay and display. The shop from the outside is very neat and presentable. The staff inside are very friendly, we went for breakfast and at first glance inside the shop is very upmarket indeed nice decor and neat and clean. The menu is very limited I have to say for breakfast, please see pics attached for reference. Ordered Sausage, Bacon & Cheese and Sausage, egg and cheese. The prices for the size would have to say small portion, but the quality of the ingredients and overall cooking is to a high standard. I would describe it as a upmarket sandwich with a price tag to match. Would have preferred more options to pick from on the menu but guess sometimes less is more in quality.”
