About Gulf House Restaurant
Gulf House Restaurant is a Middle Eastern restaurant at 74 Tradewind Square in Liverpool, serving dishes from several Gulf countries in a setting styled after 1970s Gulf restaurants. Guests sit on the floor and take their shoes off at the entrance. Meals follow the communal custom of sharing one large platter. The menu centres on mandi, made with lamb, chicken or mutton, and fresh bread comes on the side. Lamb fahsa is also on the menu, and umm ali is offered for dessert. Private traditional dining rooms are available for groups and need a request. Otherwise the restaurant is walk-in.

Customer Review Summary
Lamb mandi is the dish reviewers raise most, and opinions on it split sharply. Supporters describe it arriving piping hot, with chunky, perfectly cooked meat, generous portions and nicely seasoned rice. Others call it flavourless and not fresh, with dry rice and tough lamb, and one says the portion was tiny for the price. Close behind, the fresh bread and the traditional style of sharing a huge platter while sitting on the floor draw praise, and one reviewer liked the lamb fahsah while another found it lacking in taste. Other complaints name hummus that tasted old, a greasy kebsa made with chicken rather than red meat, and umm ali with cheese that one diner found unappetising. One reviewer reports a dirty carpet, a grimy handrail and a grim-looking kitchen area. Staff are often called warm, friendly and welcoming, and the traditional setting gets repeated mentions. One party of three was told private dining was unavailable for their size, then saw two later guests seated there immediately.

“Extremely disappointed with this place. It was incredibly expensive — I paid over £41 for a lamb shoulder, and what arrived was tiny, nowhere near the size you’d expect for that price. Even if it was meant to be a full shoulder, it was so small it felt like a complete rip-off. The hygiene and cleanliness are honestly shocking. The carpet has gone from whatever colour it was meant to be to completely black — absolutely filthy. The handrail going downstairs was black with dirt, half the paint is missing, and the whole place feels unhygienic. The kitchen area looked grim too — it really doesn’t feel like a clean or safe environment. For £41 you can get excellent food at so many better places nearby. This was overpriced, the portion was tiny, and the whole place is dirty and run-down. I won’t be coming back and I can’t recommend it to anyone. Avoid.”

“A very good restaurant where you can try several dishes from different Gulf countries. The portions were very generous, and the piece of meat was simply succulent. Thank you for the warm welcome. The place is comfortable; you can sit on the floor and take off your shoes at the entrance. I would just add some fans, as it was a little warm.”

“This was honestly one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I have ever had, and I genuinely cannot understand why this place has such high ratings. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Gulf Restaurant in Liverpool to anyone. The first problem was finding the restaurant. We had to drive around the area two or three times before we eventually found it because it was so difficult to locate. After all that effort, we walked inside expecting something worthwhile, but instead found a very small restaurant with limited seating. It certainly wasn't what I expected after reading all the positive reviews online. The next disappointment was the food portions. I ordered the lamb mandi, which cost £14, and I was shocked by how little food was served. The portion was tiny for the price. I completely understand that inflation has increased costs for restaurants, but if you're charging premium prices, then customers should receive a proper meal that leaves them satisfied. Instead, it felt like I was paying a lot of money for a portion that was far too small. I left feeling disappointed and still hungry. Then came the food itself, which was even worse. The rice was dry and hard to chew, and the lamb was extremely tough. It certainly didn't taste fresh to me, and the quality was nowhere near what I expected from a restaurant specialising in mandi. There were so many herbs and spices mixed into the rice that they completely overpowered everything else. Instead of enjoying the flavour of the meat, all I could taste was an overwhelming amount of seasoning. The entire meal was unpleasant, and I honestly regretted spending my money on it. What made the experience even more surprising was how empty the restaurant was. We visited on a Saturday evening at around 6:00 pm, which is normally one of the busiest times for restaurants. Instead, the place was almost empty. We were seated immediately because there were hardly any customers there. The atmosphere felt lifeless, and the restaurant lacked the welcoming, busy feeling that you would normally expect from a popular Middle Eastern restaurant. After reading all the glowing reviews online, I expected amazing food and excellent value for money. Unfortunately, the reality was completely different. The food quality was poor, the portions were disappointing, the prices were too high for what was served, the restaurant was difficult to find, and the atmosphere was flat because there were so few customers. Overall, this visit was a complete waste of money and a huge disappointment. I've eaten at many Middle Eastern restaurants across the UK, and this was, without question, one of the worst experiences I've personally had. I won't be returning, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for authentic, good-quality mandi. Save your money and choose somewhere else.”

“We tried the Lamb Mandi, Fahsa, and Hummus. The atmosphere and service were amazing—the staff were truly warm and welcoming from the heart. However, I wouldn't return for the Lamb Mandi, which was the main reason for our visit; the taste was far away and it didn't feel fresh. Please keep trying and wishing you the best”
