About Yum Sing Cantonese Restaurant

Yum Sing Cantonese Restaurant is a Chinese restaurant at 11 Leicester Rd, found at the end of the parade in Oadby rather than in the middle of it. The kitchen cooks Cantonese dishes including chicken chow mein, black bean chicken and garlic chicken and prawns. The food is halal, a point that matters to diners who eat only halal. The dining room handles groups, from tables of eight to parties of 20 plus.

Customer Review Summary

Diners who rate Yum Sing highly point first to the food, with one longtime regular who travels from Bolton singling out the crispy halal chicken and the prawns. Others describe delicious dishes, a lively atmosphere and friendly staff. A work group of twenty plus called the service fantastic, though courses came a little slowly, and another reviewer found it expensive but well worth it. Critics see it very differently. Several call the food average, naming the chicken chow mein and black bean chicken as not justifying their price, and a garlic chicken that arrived undercooked and chewy, with the waiter replying that it is just like that. Three reviewers dispute the automatically added service charge. One was told it was standard and had it removed only after pushing back, and another was told they should have eaten elsewhere if they disliked the service. Others describe a loud room and a rushed sitting, down to a table of eight receiving only two fortune cookies.

“Absolutely appalling from start to finish. Yum Sing is one of the most overpriced restaurants I've been to. The restaurant was incredibly loud, the food was mediocre at best, and charging £7 for a Coke is nothing short of ridiculous. The worst part of the experience was the customer service. When the bill arrived, it included a 10% discretionary service charge. I politely asked for it to be removed, as a discretionary charge is optional. The waitress with short hair and glasses responded with an attitude and told me that if I didn't pay it, I would not be welcome back. To make matters worse she brought a book out to the table and demanded our details to note we wouldn't be allowed to dine there again! I found this completely unacceptable, intimidating, and highly unprofessional. Customers should never be pressured into paying a discretionary service charge, we as paying customers are under no obligation by law to pay a discretionary service charge! For the prices they charge, I expected exceptional food and excellent service. Instead, I got average food, poor service, and an unpleasant atmosphere. There are far better restaurants offering better quality, better value, and staff who actually know how to treat paying customers with respect. I genuinely cannot understand the 5-star reviews. Based on my experience, this place deserves no more than 1 star. I won't be returning, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone looking for good food or decent customer service!”

“Food was average - nothing special. Service not great, one server in particular was plain rude When it came to paying the bill, we asked the server to remove the service charge and recalculate the bill (I do this whenever restaurants automatically add service charge to the bill, I believe it should be up to you, as a paying customer to decide if you want to leave a tip) so she asked us for feedback why, we said didn't think the service or food warranted the service charge, the response we got was we should've gone somewhere else to eat if we didn't like the service!! Wouldn't recommend and won't be going back - we will find somewhere else to eat!!”

“I visited Yum Sing with a group of eight and came away disappointed, particularly given the pricing and how feedback was handled. I want to be clear, I don’t mind paying for good food. I regularly dine at high-end restaurants, so I understand what to expect when dishes are priced at £19. In this case, both the chicken chow mein and black bean chicken were average and didn’t justify that level. The bigger issue, however, was the overall service and experience. From the moment we sat down, it felt rushed due to the next sitting. There was very little engagement no real welcome, no effort to create an experience, and food was simply placed on the table with minimal interaction. Despite this, a service charge of around £30 was added. When I asked for it to be removed, I was initially told it was “standard” and had to be paid, which isn’t correct. It was only removed after I challenged it. What stood out most was how feedback was handled. I didn’t offer criticism out of the blue I was asked directly by our server, Ann, how the food was. I gave an honest and fair answer, that it hadn’t met expectations for the price. The response I received was: “Don’t come back again.” That’s not an acceptable way to respond to a customer, especially when you’ve asked for their opinion. Constructive feedback should be taken on board, not dismissed. At no point did the manager, Alan, come over to address the situation or even acknowledge it, which was disappointing. Even smaller details reflected the overall approach for example, only two fortune cookies were given for a table of eight (including four children), and asking for more was met with reluctance. Overall, this felt like a restaurant charging premium prices without delivering a premium experience and more importantly, not open to feedback when it’s invited.”

“I visited this restaurant recently with friends after finding it on Instagram, and unfortunately the experience didn’t live up to expectations. The food was quite average overall. The garlic chicken in particular was disappointing, it was undercooked and very chewy. I mentioned this to the waiter, but the response I received was, “it’s just like that,” which wasn’t reassuring. Service also felt rushed, even though the restaurant wasn’t particularly busy at the time. It gave the impression that more attention was being given to regular customers rather than new diners, which didn’t feel very welcoming. Overall, it wasn’t a great experience and not somewhere I would return to or recommend.”
