Customer Review Summary
Desserts draw the warmest praise, with diners singling out the dark cherry pavlova, the lemon meringue pie and a tangy cheddar with homemade digestives. Close behind are the devilled eggs, beef brisket, pigeon and coley with chowder. Reviewers describe the front of house as friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu. The complaints cluster around mains. Two diners say the bavette steak arrived wrong, one overdone like well done roast beef beside dry roast potatoes, the other raw and sinewy with shrivelled mushrooms. One calls the cod the blandest dish they have tasted, though another praises it. A Sunday roast was called under seasoned, with one bowl of mostly boiled carrots for three. When the overdone steak was sent back and the kitchen had sold out, it and the wine were taken off the bill.

“This review is purely based on my Sunday lunch experience. Not worth it, 3 of us went for a Sunday lunch and we left quite disappointed. We paid £26 for beef roast each (see my pic), lack of presentation and it was under seasoned. Also we only got one bowl of steamed veg( which mainly consisted of boiled carrots)for the 3 of us, I don't know how you calculate this one. Most delicious things was the horse radish sauce. The price was way too high for what we got.”

“Pure Perfection 👌🏼 A group of us went last night for the £20 two-course AND a cocktail menu and it was devine. It was so good, we forced ourselves and squeezed in an extra course and cocktail. A perfect Thursday night to kick-start the weekend. Amazing value, delicious food from Angus and the team, great vibes and as always we were warmly welcomed by the fabulous Jo. You must go - but book - it was busy!”

“This restaurant deserves all the praise it gets, the food is delicious, and the staff are lovely and attentive. We visited on a Saturday night, and it had a great intimate vibe about the place. All of the food was great, particularly the pigeon and the cod. Our only issue was the price of the asparagus, considering the portion size we felt £12 was far too much. The cod was £11 so it didn’t make too much sense. We understood that the ingredients are of high quality but regardless it was still quite disappointing. Other than that, highly recommend for a date night!”

“Extremely disappointing visit. Booked a table for a special occasion and the food was dire. The service was hit and miss, after we were seated we were only left with one menu for instance and had to ask for a second menu, as well as a wine list. One waitress attended the table and talked us through the menu, that was the highlight of the visit. She explained each dish on the menu and answered some questions. Unfortunately one of the questions was how the steak is served… pink, and what level of pink, medium rare? Medium well? Medium rare. So we ordered, my wife went for a pork dish and myself the Bavette. After a substantial wait, the food arrived. The steak was so well done it was like a well done roast beef. Might have passed for a Sunday dinner at a cheap carvery but certainly not cutting it for a restaurant positioning itself against Bavette and The Laddie for instance. I caught the waitresses attention, there was no disputing the steak was completely over done. She took it to the kitchen and returned to say, there’s no more steaks, they’re sold out, they can’t make me another, did I want something else. Now I have to say at this point, the poor waitress handled the situation excellently. I came for the steak, I don’t like pork or fish. So I just said “guess I’m eating the roast beef.” The sides were also lacklustre with the “crispy potatoes “ being large, dry roast potatoes. A picture speaks a thousand words, what kind of kitchen would send this out. Had it been sat under a heat lamp for 30 mins? Or over rested in the oven? However it happened - wouldn’t be happy at a Wetherspoons nevermind a “fine dining bistro” And as we left after paying the bill, there were more steaks being collected from the pass. Embarrassing ordeal. They took the steak and my wine off the bill but the money is not the point, it was one of maybe 2 evenings out a year that my wife and I get without the kids, and it was just unacceptable. We went to Bavette for the same occasion last year and it was perfect. Different league.”
