  “One of the first things that stood out to me was the sense of humour. Like many people from Tianjin, I appreciate the city's down-to-earth, witty style, which can be felt in the signs and posters on the walls. They are funny, intriguing, and capture a bit of that local spirit. As someone from Tianjin, I found 津包小酒馆 very interesting and familiar. Personally, I do not always like Tianjin-style dishes, because they often contain coriander and strong-smelling spices that can feel a bit uncomfortable for me. However, the restaurant owners are happy to tailor the dishes by removing coriander and other ingredients upon request. But this place still gave me a strong sense of home and local character. The 煎饼果子 cost £5 per set and is vegetarian with egg tasted exactly like the Tianjin street food I remember from childhood, the same flavour as the ones sold downstairs from my grandpa's home, where he would often buy them for me. What I especially like now is that I can tailor the 煎饼果子 according to my own taste. There is also the kind of down-to-earth Tianjin spirit that never takes itself too seriously, while staying open to both small and big changes. At the same time, there is an openness that feels quite in tune with British culture, comfortable, welcoming, and happy to let people enjoy things in their own way. The atmosphere feels warm, casual, and full of everyday life. It is not over-decorated or pretentious, but has a simple, lively charm. I still appreciate the effort to bring this kind of regional food and atmosphere here. It helped me feel more grounded and comfortable in the UK.”

  “Everything is fine and the shop owners are a lovely couple. They'll even persuade you to order less when you've ordered too much, rather than having you order a bunch of food that you can't eat and pack it home. However, the location and decoration are general and not convenient for parking.”

  “A wonderful restaurant that deserves more love and support. The beef brisket noodle casserole is so flavourful and aromatic, always leaves you wanting more! The beef is especially tender and delicious, and goes well with the tomato and noodles. Also great value for money with the large portions! The staff are welcoming and kind, with a comfortable atmosphere that feels like home.”

  “How could I visit a chinese snack bar and not order skewers and jian bing? Situated directly opposite the uni, it was impossible to resist. We ordered a few skewers of pork belly slices, chicken feet, beans, fish balls and chicken along with jian bing and a beef brisket noodle casserole. I loved the noodles! The soup was familiar and I loved the sour element of the soup from the vinegar. The jian bing was more than I expected, expectation wise and portion wise, I loved the crunchy texture from the crispy won ton skin. Lastly, the skewers were so good though all I will say is, wow what kind of slicing method was employed to slice pork slices that paper thin? All in all, I definitely would recommend this place if you want a taste of Chinese street food that is decently priced yet quick to eat near the university!”
