About Maxhouse Sandwich and Salad Bar

Maxhouse Sandwich and Salad Bar is a sandwich shop at 361 Hessle Rd in Hull, open daily during the daytime only. The menu starts with breakfast and runs through regular and special sandwiches, paninis, toasties and burgers. Chicken kebab skewers and a Chinese chicken wrap sit alongside them, which gives the kitchen more range than a standard sandwich counter. Mix Salad Boxes, chips and roast potato complete the list. Food is cooked to order, so a wait is common at peak times.

“I would have originally rated this a 4 but we have been on too many occasions now where they have messed up our orders. Its quite simple, the same 2 sandwiches one sandwich always has sauce on, they label the bags yet somehow always manage to put them in the wrong bags, even when we ask are they labelled correctly this time. They have a team of young staff, maybe its that. Although at this point I'm just assuming its incompetence.”

“Twice I've been here, twice the food was horrible, yes, horrible, low quality, staff seem disinterested and as if you are asking too much of them for a sandwich and a coffee.... Do yourself a favour, go elsewhere”

“People complaining about the staff smiling are being ridiculous... this place is very popular and the staff are too busy for chit chat. 100% I would rather talk with staff then a self checkout like most stores. Fair prices for such large portions, expect a slight wait at peak times as they cook to order. I moved out of the area but still pop some weekends for a good £7 hangover cure. Put an order in then pop to B&M while it's being prepared...Ideal!!”

“The food is great here. The chips and the kebabs are very tasty, portions are generous, service is fast and the price is good. However, I have been here several times now and the staff often seem annoyed at you and are a bit rude. I think if the staff were to smile a bit more here it would definitely improve the place”

“I've have to change my review from 5 stars for everything to 3. Reason being is I have now been here multiple occasions and I can honestly say although the food isn't too bad the atmosphere is awful. I have never ever met staff so miserable in my entire life. Never smile, no personality, no nothing. Foodwise we used to order the breakfast wrap but I aren't sure what changed but the sausages in the wrap just don't go, soley because they leave an odd taste behind. I'd change that brand of sausages to get the quality up. Although everything's cooked fresh, the time they take to cook is so slow. In between cooking my breakfasts on numerous occasions I've had to wait 25-30 mins while he moves his stock that's been delivered and been putting order foods out on display. I used to love this place and was for a long time my go to for breakfast and salad trays or sandwich/ burger for the occasional lunch as i work close by but I can't deal with the miserable atmosphere here. I get there in a great mood, ready to start my day and by the time I've come out I feel like visiting the Humber. Luckily, there's many cafe's in the area and Greggs around the corner. Sorry I had to lower my review guys but seriously you guys need to smile a bit. Its depressing after over a year of using you.”

Customer Review Summary

Chicken wraps draw the most praise, including a Chinese chicken wrap that one reviewer calls beautiful, with regulars saying they always order them. Close behind are the paninis, described as generous with cheese, along with the chips, kebabs and salad. Reviewers repeatedly mention large portions, fair prices and fresh food cooked to order, and one says the staff remember regulars and their orders. Staff draw split opinions. Several reviewers call them friendly, polite and helpful, while others describe them as miserable, annoyed or disinterested. One longtime regular says the breakfast wrap sausages left an odd taste and waits of 25 to 30 minutes between breakfasts became common. Another reports the same two sandwiches repeatedly ended up in the wrong labelled bags, with the sauce always on the wrong one. One reviewer calls the food horrible after two visits. A reviewer who defends the staff says they are too busy for chit chat and suggests putting in an order, then popping next door while it is prepared.
