Quick info
About Pollards Plaice
On Holderness Rd in Hull, Pollards Plaice is a fish and chips shop open daily, with a seating area for eating in. The kitchen takes an old-fashioned approach. Haddock is cooked fresh in a seasoned batter and served with the skin on, and the chips are cooked in beef tallow, so the classic plate has a traditional frying style behind it. Mushy-style peas come alongside the fish and chips, and the menu also lists a cheese onion patty for anyone who wants something other than fish. Street parking is available on the high street. East Park sits right next to the shop.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the fish, with a crisp, seasoned batter and pure white fillets cooked fresh rather than left to go soggy. One calls the batter the best they have had, another notes the old-fashioned skin-on fish, and a diner praises a huge haddock with plenty of chips. Close behind are the peas, described as sweet, and the curry sauce, which one reviewer calls to die for while two others found harsh or watery and too spicy. Chips split opinion: some call them magnificent and cooked in beef tallow, while others found most hard or burnt on the bottom, or simply terrible. The most repeated complaint is staff manner. Two reviewers describe a worker who seemed annoyed they were there, one recounting being treated as unwelcome at 7:30 PM, while many others found the staff friendly and welcoming. Several mention a clean shop that is not greasy, and a few mention the nearby park for eating outside. One reviewer describes the cashier helping them find a pub for a drink afterward.

“Went here after having a lil stroll of East Park as the wife was craving for some fish and chips. Service was really nice despite being really busy with the amount of customers on a Friday. The fish was really nice, batter was light and crisp but not overly oily. Chips were magnificent! Take note they do serve old-fashioned fish with the skin on.”

“I recently moved to the area and have visited pollards a few times now, the fish is really good with a nice seasoned batter and always cooked fresh. Just been in and got a chip butty plenty of salt and vinegar, cheese onion patty and a can of pop, very reasonably priced and the 1 ladies serving (I think Marie is one of them) absolutely fantastic service from walking in, “hi can we get you any fish this evening?” Love that it’s cooked fresh and not sat around to go soggy like other chippys. Great service and I also noticed how clean the place was to say it’s almost the end of service they keep it clean and tidy. If you haven’t tried it already give it a go.”

“The atmosphere is very clean, but the staff overall seems mad that you are there. The fish was great, but the chips were terrible. The pattie was good, but you can't claim to be the best, and have average food. It didn't live up to the expectation. Also, there is this thing called money. Most restaurants are in business for money. I guess they do so well that they don't feel being reasonable with customers is necessary. Act like you enjoy a customer coming in, rather than upset you have to deal with a customer. Unprofessional, and off putting.”

“Great value for money, 3 adult meals for about £24 with drinks. Food was great, staff were super friendly too! For a chippy it was clean, food wasn’t greasy and the curry sauce was to die for! Would 100% recommend and will definitely be coming back.”
