About Hangleton Manor
Hangleton Manor is a restaurant and pub on Hangleton Valley Dr in Hove, housed in a building that dates to the mid-16th century, when it was built as the home of the High Sheriff of Sussex. It is the second most listed building in Brighton and Hove, and original flagstone floors remain inside. The pub is open daily. The kitchen serves a Sunday roast with pork belly or beef as the named choices, plus fish and chips in beer batter. A specials board changes the line-up, with lamb and linguine among the dishes listed. The ice cream is made in house, with whiskey marmalade, chocolate brownie and mango sorbet among the flavours. Homemade fudge and cheesecake also appear on the dessert list. The pub has recently come under new management and has a new head chef.

Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast draws the most praise, especially the pork belly, with one diner saying they might move to Hove to have it weekly, and another praising the beef, crisp potatoes and generous portions. Close behind is the home-made ice cream, with whiskey marmalade, chocolate brownie and mango sorbet named, plus a cheesecake and home-made fudge. Sea bass, lamb, linguine and fish and chips also earn mentions, and several say the food has improved under new management. The garden and friendly service come up repeatedly. Against that, two reviewers describe staff confronting young children over sweets eaten in the garden, one saying a manager shouted in a four-year-old's face, the family was told to leave and the police were called after they asked to finish paid drinks. A local adds that staff have often seemed unfriendly. A three-star review cites uncomfortable seating, hard carrots and an accessible toilet down one step. One regular notes there are treats for the dog.

“Me and my husband came for dinner about a week ago and we had the specials (The lamb and the linguine). The food was of a really high standard. Previously, before the new ownership, we were very disappointed by the food. We were also very pleased to hear the ice creams were all made in house. Alongside this the service was excellent and very attentive. It’s nice to know that our local pub is serving proper restaurant quality food. We will definitely be coming back.”

“Fabulous lunch at Hangleton Manor. Delicious food and great service by Zoe and the team. Lovely calm atmosphere. I would highly recommend… I throughly enjoy my sea bass and my friend the cauliflower steak main course. The chefs really know how to cook a delicious meal. The homemade fudge was divine. !”

“Very mediocre, The service is excellent and the staff are lovely but the seating is really uncomfortable. The dining room doesn’t allow for people to walk past you easily and the accessible toilet is down one step which is hardly accessible., They give lip service to being inclusive, possibly this is great great if you want to run in of the mill Sunday lunch but it isn’t anything special. I think it’s overpriced for what it is, The people in my group said their food was good but not wonderful. No one raved about the desert they were complaints about the carrots being too hard and my salad was nothing special. For the price they could do better I was totally underwhelmed”

“We visited Hangleton Manor last week when the sun was scorching - it was wonderful to sit out on the garden in the fresh air under the shade of a large umbrella. The service was fantastic - friendly and efficient, and the food was fabulous. I had the butternut squash salad with feta cheese which was light and delicious - perfect for a hot summers day. My husband had the fish and chips which was tender and flaky with a tasty, crispy beer batter. For desert we couldn’t resist trying some of the home-made ice cream …. I had 1 scoop each of whiskey marmalade and chocolate brownie and my husband had 1 scoop each of chocolate brownie and mango sorbet. The ice creams were all absolutely divine - we couldn’t choose a favourite! Highly recommended! We will be back!”

“Absolutely appalling experience – by far the worst pub experience I’ve ever had. We visited with our children and the manager’s behaviour was completely unacceptable. He shouted directly in my 4-year-old’s face over the fact they were eating sweets, which was intimidating, unnecessary and left us all shocked. We were then told to leave because we had brought sweets into the pub garden. We accepted that it was their policy, but the way it was handled was unbelievably aggressive and unprofessional. We simply asked if we could finish the drinks we had already paid for before leaving, but instead the police were called. As a parent, I have never felt so uncomfortable or unwelcome in a family pub. There are far better places where staff know how to speak to adults and, more importantly, how to treat children with kindness and respect. If you’re thinking of visiting with your family, I would strongly recommend avoiding this place. No child should be shouted at by a manager over something as trivial as eating sweets, and no family should be treated the way we were. We certainly won’t be returning.”

“Hangleton Manor is a glorious country pub and restaurant in Hove, East Sussex, UK. Situated in Hove just outside Brighton, the Hangleton Manor is a stunning historical pub. The second most listed building in Brighton and Hove after the Royal Pavilion, the Manor was originally the home of the High Sheriff of Sussex, who built it in the mid-16th century. Now a glorious pub the Hangleton Manor is full of interesting features. With original flagstone floors and probably the largest pub garden in Brighton & Hove, it’s cosy in the winter and glorious in the summer.”
