Customer Review Summary

Sea trout is the dish reviewers praise most, described as cooked to perfection, with crispy skin and a cucumber salad. Close behind are the steak and ale pie, whose filling and gravy diners enjoyed, and the sticky toffee pudding, with roast pork and a duck and port parfait also singled out. Staff are called friendly, and the bar and restaurant are described as cosy and full of character. The complaints centre on value and execution. One diner received a cold, tough Sunday beef roast with watery gravy after being told only one portion was left. Another found tiny tacos, a short rib with no veg and only a few chips, and a tasteless Moroccan carrot dish. One reviewer said the pie topping was leather hard. A guest staying in a quirky room with low doorways mentions banging from the door below. Several reviewers held weddings or large Sunday lunches here, one for fifty guests the day after a wedding, and describe the team as accommodating and flexible.

“Excellent pub. Nice soft shelled crab, maybe could have stretched to two crabs for the price. Good steak and ale pie. The filling and gravy were delicious but whoever made the leather hard topping needs pastry making lessons. Sea trout was cooked to perfection and sticky toffee pudding excellent. Service friendly and efficient. Thankyou”

“Absolutely abysmal. We came to the Cavendish Arms after seeing the great reviews and were really looking forward to a proper Sunday roast. We initially ordered two beef roasts, only to later be told there was just one portion of beef left. Fair enough it was a Sunday, so we could understand that. What we couldn't understand was how a £25 roast dinner could be this bad. When the food eventually arrived, it was barely warm. The beef was so tough it was genuinely like trying to eat carpet. Four slices of chewy beef, two roast potatoes, a bit of red cabbage and watery gravy and, to top it off, the whole thing was cold. For £25, you'd expect a decent plate of food, not something that looks like it's been thrown together five minutes before closing time. The roast was so disappointing that we genuinely wondered what all the good reviews had been eating. The biggest shame is that we had high expectations because of the reviews, but unfortunately the experience didn't come close to living up to them. £25 for a roast that was cold, tough and incredibly underwhelming. Safe to say, we won't be going back.”

“After many years of visiting The Cavendish this September my partner and I hosted our wedding at the pub and it was absolutely incredible. I have always loved our afternoons/evenings in the pub whether your eating or just in for a drink the service is second to none. All our family and friends could not believe the service, setting and food/drink they got over the course of the day - we really felt like royalty! If you are in Cartmel and fancy a nice glass of wine (in a gorgeous glass!), a cosy meal or even are planning a pub wedding I can't recommend The Cav enough - my favourite pub in the world and can't wait for many more visits to come! Huge thanks to Richard, Christoph, Charlie, Wana and all the team for just being brilliant! The new Mr and Mrs Russell!!”

“My neice had her wedding at the cavendish in cartmel and it was, hands down, the best wedding I’ve ever been to! Gorgeous venue, exceptional service, fabulous staff, beautiful food - you couldn’t ask for anything more. I’ll definitely be back to enjoy more time in Cartmel and come to the Cavendish again”

“We are long time customers of the Cavendish and often go there for an evening meal. We last went for a large booking for Sunday lunch for the day after our wedding with 50 of our friends and family. The team were so accommodating and flexible with our needs and the food was delicious. We really appreciate the efforts taken to help make it a great experience for everyone - especially those who had travelled over from Canada for the first time.”
