About Oriental Chef
Oriental Chef is a Chinese takeaway in Godalming, at 125 High St. A husband-and-wife team runs the business. The husband is the chef, so the cooking of the Chinese food rests with him, while his wife looks after customers. Each half of the work has its own dedicated person, with one person in the kitchen and one person on the customer side. The menu is Chinese, in the form of a takeaway.

Customer Review Summary
Warm counter service is the most repeated praise. Reviewers describe the woman at the front as sweet, kind and hard working, and her husband as a great chef. Those who like the food call it authentic and consistently great, including one customer who has ordered for 18 years. Other reviewers describe a very different kitchen. The Kung Po king prawn is called watery with no flavour, the satay chicken skewers oily with minimal sauce, and the salt and pepper squid and crispy chilli beef burnt and chewy. The egg fried rice is bland, one reviewer found the beef grey, and another said the sweet and sour sauce tasted off. A Saturday order brought dry, tough chicken in both dishes and a busy phone line, though the quarter duck with hoisin was nice. One diner says the food has gone downhill and threw the whole order away, eating cheese and crackers instead.

“What a shame...totally gone down hill. Tasteless and watery. Threw it ALL away and just had cheese and crackers! Crappy birthday treat.... booooooooo”

“I have been getting takeaway from here for 18 years and the food is consistently great. Michelle is so sweet and kind and works so hard. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.”

“Saturday night, our usual Chinese - KC had a busy phone line so couldn’t get through. Just realised I was also overcharged after looking back at menu items! 3 meals for £27. Quarter duck was nice with good hoisin but minimal cucumber given. Both chicken dishes were dry and tough chicken. Perhaps we got an unlucky day but would have thought weekends would be key. Staff were friendly.”

“Despite exceptionally smiley staff (“I’d die for her” says my wife) the Oriental Chef serves up rather bland fare. ‘Fried’ was the prevailing flavour. Nothing offensive but nothing exciting. The official hygiene score sadly puts the nail in the coffin.”
