Customer Review Summary
Reviewers come for seafood small plates built on Scottish produce, with the Barra scallops the most praised item. One notes they carry a supplement on the market menu but calls them worth it. Close behind are the oysters, the Orkney crab doughnut, and mussels with soft bread that soaks up a tomato base. Arbroath smokie croquettes, house-made pasta and a sardine dish also earn mentions, and one diner enjoyed the Spanish influence on Scottish ingredients. Plates arrive as they are ready, and several describe the seafood as fresh and the presentation as beautiful. Service is called warm, attentive and friendly, the atmosphere relaxed, and the patio and music draw comments, while one reviewer suggests making reservations. Criticism is mild. One found the dessert just OK and the service solid but unspectacular, and another did not care for the fruit salad, which they put down to personal taste. A lunch combo of two smalls and a side is called good value, and one diner closes on Isle of Skye langoustines served with the tools to crack them open.

“Took my pal here for the market menu & we were blown away. First off the restaurant is lovely with a great atmosphere, the staff were all delightful. Knowledgeable, attentive and friendly, it's the best service I've had in ages and if you look at my reviews you'll see that I've been going out to several highly rated local restaurants over the summer. Honestly you were the best. Everything we tried was interesting. I loved the scallops obviously there's a supplement for those but they were worth it. The Arbroath smokie croquettes were interesting although I thought they were more like buñuelos than croquettes. Considering how strong the flavour of smokies is, it was well balanced and delicate without losing the flavour or being overpowering, very well done. I was surprised how much I liked the pasta, they boasted that it was made on the premises and they've got a right to be proud of that. I'm not always fond of sardines but it really worked as a dish. As someone who spends a lot of time in Spain, I really like to see our beautiful Scottish products with some Spanish flair and influences, it's definitely a great combination. Honestly we loved it, if I had to criticise anything I'd say the salad wasn't my favourite but that's just personal taste as I tend not to like fruit except the obvious tomatoes in savoury dishes. I'd also comment that they don't put those stupid discretionary tips on their bills as they don't need to when you have such a great level of service, most people will tip appropriately.”

“I was on a work trip and my colleague and I were tired from our trip, so we needed an early dinner. This place was amazing. I was looking for a seafood place that used local ingredients. This was a small place and was a 5 minute walk from the hotel that I was staying in Glasgow. We tried several of their small plates and all of them were one better than the other. All of the seafood were extremely fresh and we ate with out eyes before we ate the food. I loved the oysters best. The service was excellent and we could not ask for more. We were so full that we had no place for dessert. Check out the pics from my post. Highly recommend this place if you like seafood especially because there aren’t many good choices in Glasgow.”

“Legitimately might be one of the best meals I've ever had in my life. Upon a friend's recommendation, we visited Kelp while in town for a concert and we are SO happy we did. Each dish was vibrant, visually beautiful and packed with unique flavor. There's clearly passion here and it shows brilliantly with every plate and cocktail. Front of house staff were lovely, atmosphere was relaxed and comfortable. Our only disappointment is that this wasn't our last meal in Scotland- as I'm sure we'll be dreaming and comparing everything there after to Kelp! Cheers!”

“The concept behind Kelp Restaurant is to bring a taste of Scotland’s best and most sustainably sourced sea food to Glasgow’s Table. Sourcing unique and artisan products from the Highlands and Islands is of great importance to us. So please, sit back and enjoy a dram or tuck into some of Scotland’s best offerings from Barra to Ardnamurchan. Kelp are large brown algae/ seaweeds, despite its appearance, kelp is not a plant and like our name sake, we are more than we appear. Although we are a predominantly sea food restaurant, we also have a diverse and versatile menu which caters to any dietary needs.”
