On Jamaica St in Glasgow, The Crystal Palace is a Wetherspoon pub at number 36, housed in a building styled on Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace. The interior is iron and glass, and the pub runs over two floors, with an old style lift serving the second floor. Breakfast is served until 12 noon, with tea and Lavazza coffee refilled free all day. Lunch includes a deli option, and the menu lists fish and chips and a Mushroom Benedict alongside burgers and pizzas. The bar pours six hand pulled cask conditioned real ales, plus draught and bottled drinks, local Scottish beers and Scottish whisky. Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the building itself, a two-floor Wetherspoons with an iron and glass interior that one says recalls Glasgow's industrial days, plus an old style lift to the upper floor. Close behind is the food and drink: fish and chips described as larger and better than elsewhere, a tasty Mushroom Benedict at breakfast, a deli lunch, a well kept Guinness and several hand pulled real ales. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and efficient even when the pub is busy, and a few mention good value and coffee refills. The criticism centres on slow food and wrong orders. One group waited a long time with no warning, and all four of them had something missing from their plates, including extra items they had paid for. Another reviewer found closing time rushed, with staff pressing customers to finish drinks after a very late last bell. One reviewer calls the kids pizza barely a pizza, and says the upper floor feels more like a bar than a restaurant.

“★★★☆☆ Lovely bar, but a very disappointing end to the night The Crystal Palace is a lovely Wetherspoons with a really nice interior. It was very clean and tidy, the staff were friendly, and overall we were having a very enjoyable evening. Unfortunately, the way closing time was handled really spoiled what had otherwise been a good night. The closing bell was rung only about a minute before closing, and customers were then given roughly 10 minutes to finish their drinks. Everything became very rushed, with staff putting pressure on people to drink up. Comments such as, “If you don't drink, we'll take the pint away from you,” came across as quite rude and unnecessary. I completely understand that the staff need to close on time, but customers should be given more reasonable notice so they can finish their drinks without being rushed. It’s a bar, after all. I’m giving 3 stars because the venue itself is very nice and the evening was good, but the experience at closing was a very poor ending and genuinely took away from what had otherwise been a great night.”

“Very authentic Scottish public house with very friendly and attentive staff. Great choice of local beers and fine Scottish whisky. Will definitely visit again.”

“We waited over an hour for our food, I wouldn't have minded if they had let us know when getting our drinks that there was a wait but they didnt, there were a lot of people constantly asking about their food, the table next to us were told it was due to 2 staff ringing in sick however we witnessed 2 members of staff going out for smoke breaks 3 times, in the time we were there. There was 4 of us and noone had the correct items on thier plates, we all had something missing, including extra items we had paid for, we wont be back.”
