Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most for the steak pie, described as having tender meat and thick gravy, though one says it could have been hotter and arrived with fries rather than proper chips. Close behind are the steak, called tender and juicy, plus homemade pate, beef stroganoff, veal, gammon steaks and a sweet herring starter. Macaroni, apple crumble and custard also earn praise. Friendly, fast service and generous portions come up repeatedly, and several call it good value. A few suggest booking ahead, and one who hadn't booked on a busy Father's Day was still found a table. The main complaint is a chicken schnitzel that arrived with soggy, uncooked breadcrumbs instead of a crisp coating. The server said it always comes that way, and a complaint at the end of the meal met an indifferent reaction. One diner also finished a ham salad with only a single slice of cucumber, and a cool orange drink arrived with ice that watered it down.

“I'll start with the good - some nice waiting staff and decent kids meal portions. However, £16.50 for a complete failure of a chicken schnitzel is not OK. When it came out looking like this (see photo) I asked the server if that's how they usually look as I expected the chicken to be breaded and crispy. I was told that this is how they always come. On closer inspection there was some evidence of some soggy uncooked breadcrumbs so this is obviously a very unique preparation of what should be a pretty straightforward dish. It was just about edible so I did finish it because I was hungry, but I did complain again at the end of the meal to an indifferent reaction. So reluctantly I turn to Google reviews to double check I'm not going mad... I'm not saying avoid the place but if you do go, give the chicken schnitzel a miss.”

“Lovely tasting food & worth the weight 😁 Thurs 7/3/24 We returned from a funeral & went in to the Clairmont inn at around 3pm & at that time there weren't many in. I ordered their stake pie & chips & the meat in it was quite tender & the gravy was nice & thick BUT the whole meal wasn't piping hot 🔥 & it was those french fries 🍟 rather than proper chips 😞 There were no hard carrots 🥕 either 👍 -- at least my plate🍽️ was warm & my friend Janie's plate was piping 🔥 & i wished mine was like that & i've never felt a plate as hot as that in any of the eateries that I've been in b4. For my sweet, I opted for their apple 🍏 crumble & custard & it came on a shallow plate & the 🍏 crumble was nice & hot, the custard wasn't too runny & was warm - so there u have it & we both cleared our plates. Back in again on Sunday 13/7/25 for my lunch. Because of the good weather I choose to have a ham salad, which I ate all up. Despite it not having my favourite lettuce - iceberg 🥬 & it was unusual to have only ONE slice of cucumber 🥒 on my plate but plenty of grated cheese. The cold meat tasted very good & also the 4 potatoes included the small one were boiled to perfection & as usual the service was very good too I had ticked off the coffee BUT didn't opt for it & just enjoyed a cool drink of lovely fresh orange 🍊 & forgot to ask for NO ice cubes in it 'cos it tends to water it down. I noticed a few folks sat at a ROUND table & I felt that is better for communication if a few folks r a bit deaf & have to lip read. Back in again near the end of January & the highlight STARTER for me was there Sweet Herring & if you like 🐠 it's not to be missed. I also opted for a small portion of stake pie & there were NO tough bits of steak in it - nice & tender it was BUT the meat could have been a bit more hotter 🔥 My friend enjoyed her large macaroni & I sampled a bit of it - it wasn't at all dry but nice & creamy G of course the chips weren't all soggy & cold but lovely & crisp - as usual SO you all know where to go when I'm Polment. PS. All the staff r very friendly especially the top guy Slim Ellis.”

“Visited the Claremont inn, for a belated birthday lunch, gift from my sister. What can we say, lovely friendly staff from the outset, Sophie, youngest guy didn't get his name, all charming. We are really fussy, but this is a class act! Homemade pate, and it was homemade! Brushetta, beef stroganoff, excellent. Veal wonderful , so rare to see it on a menu. An absolute pleasure to visit a must go to. Lady that we paid, was a joy. Julie Hugh Sneddon.”

“Took my grandmother out for lunch on a busy Father’s Day at this traditional restaurant that does classic bar meal food - steak pies, gammon steaks etc. Hadn’t booked but the staff were able to find us a table under pressure. Service was fab. Sunday lunch was nice. I’d go back - but I’d book!”
