About Chop House

Chop House is a steak house and cocktail bar in Edinburgh's Old Town, set within a C-listed brickwork arch at Arch 15 E Market St. The split-level bar and restaurant gives the building two seating areas, with small booth-style seating downstairs and more seats upstairs. Steak is the centre of the menu, with rump steak and a porterhouse to share among the cuts. Steaks arrive without chips, so chips are ordered separately as a side. Diners can also sit at the bar for dinner, where the cocktail list includes an elderflower gimlet.

Customer Review Summary

Steak is the main draw at Chop House, with the rump steak and the porterhouse to share singled out most often, and diners describe steaks cooked just as they asked, one calling the rump tasty and pink but not bloody. Close behind are starters, with the mussels and the tiger prawns with a slightly sweet relish named as favorites, and the sticky ribs and chimichurri roasted chicken also drawing praise. Several mention friendly, helpful staff and a welcoming atmosphere, and one vegetarian loved the sides. Complaints are less frequent but specific. One reviewer found the espresso martini small and watery and sent it back, said the chips were thin like crisps and had to be ordered separately with a steak, and felt the sticky ribs lacked sauce. Another found the roast meat and potatoes under-seasoned, and a third said the steak arrived only warm when the bar was short-staffed. Another noted the downstairs booths sit high and the upper level has no lift. One booking mix-up was settled with a single phone call.

“Food was good enough. My husband had steak but you need to order chips separate otherwise all you get for £40 is a steak on the plate. The chips I got with my steak burger were like crisps ..so thin and crunchy . Ordered an espresso martini . £12.50.. very small glass and after 2 sips I had to send it back and re ordered a vodka I couldn't drink it . Tasted very watery . The mac and cheese side was tasty ..burger I had was decent . My husband said his steak was excellent . Tempura prawns were ok. The sticky ribs never had enough sauce. Staff were lovely 👌 Deffo wouldn't rush back though ..which is a shame as we were so looking forward to going .”

“The restaurant has an odd layout. You have a small booth type seating downstairs and more seats upstairs. The food tasted great we had the mussels and prawns for our starters . Then the rump steak for our main. The steak tasted fantastic and highly recommended. Staff are friendly and helpful. Prices are reasonable for Edinburgh. It's not been designed for disabled customers. The downstairs booth seating is high up and not easy getting into .The upper area has no lift. So if you need to book then make sure you book downstairs.”

“Definitely recommend if you are a steak lover. We visited with a vegetarian who absolutely loved the sides and non meat options. Service was prompt, professional, and on point. There was an issue with my party not mentioning they were dining on a reservation so they thought I no showed. This was cleared up with a single phone call and about 2 minutes (that would not have been the case back home). Most importantly the mains and sides were all excellent. I recommend the porterhouse to share.”

“It’s in an old arch , you’ll understand when you get here. Such a quiet place for a snack or dinner , Michael in the kitchen made such a good job of the Tuma and Sticky ribs. You have to chat with Jess , so friendly & introduced my wife to Elderflower Fizz and Elderflower Gimlet, both are excellent. If you want a place away from the Crazy Mile , great food and the best service … this is the place to go.”
