About Ancient Grains Eastbourne
Ancient Grains Eastbourne is a family-run Sardinian restaurant and wine bar at 38 Meads St in Eastbourne, open Thursday to Sunday and closed Monday to Wednesday. The menu follows recipes handed down from an owner's grandmother, and dishes are made to order from fresh ingredients. Seafood leads the savoury side, with Tagliolini con astice e gamberoni as the pasta course and an octopus and potato salad as a starter. Desserts are homemade, and the Seadas is one of them. The wine list covers Sardinian and Italian bottles, and the staff make recommendations to match the food. The room is small and set in a neighbourhood, with carefully curated knick-knacks as its decor.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the seafood, with the lobster and king prawn pasta (tagliolini con astice e gamberoni) named repeatedly as outstanding, one diner mopping up its sweet sauce with Italian bread. Close behind is the octopus, served as a starter or as a potato salad, alongside the lamb chops with a lemon sauce, a catch of the day sole, beef and lobster ravioli, and Catalana fish stew. Desserts such as the deep fried pie with honey, seadas, torta pardula and a ricotta and saffron cheesecake also get mentions. Several Sardinian diners call the food authentic, one noting recipes handed down from an owner's grandmother, and another says it felt like a journey back home after a nearly 2-hour trip. The atmosphere comes up as warm, intimate and homely, and staff are described as friendly and informative with wine and special recommendations. One solo diner felt comfortable, and one reviewer stopped in for a few glasses of wine and stayed for dinner. No complaints appear. Reviewers close on plans to return, and one asks how to pre-order a recipe book.

“This place has been on my list of restaurants I’d like to visit for some time- I finally went last weekend with my Sardinian partner and it did not disappoint. Exceptional service and wonderful, wonderful food; incredibly authentic. We had the seafood and it was to die for! The staff are absolutely lovely and we felt right at home. I also loved all the little knick knacks that have been carefully curated to make this restaurant feel like a little slice of home, no matter where you are from. It takes a lot of thought, hard work and dedication to successfully run a restaurant like this. Can’t wait to go back!”

“I am not one to usually write reviews, however I felt compelled to when I was inspired by the delicious food here. Wow! What a find in this little village in Eastbourne. Our table of 5 had the Fritelle - swiss chard fritters with pecorino cheese, to start. Then onto the impressive main - Tagliolini con astice e gamberoni (Lobster pasta with king prawns), and mopped up the beautifully sweet sauce with some lovely Italian bread. Followed by Seadas, Torta Pardula and chocolate truffles - all homemade and to share. Everyone was more than satiated with their food choices - which included steak, lobster ravioli, buttered pasta with Italian sausage and Catalana fish stew. Everything was super fresh and made to order. Compliments to the chef and to Carla for a truly authentic, hospitable Sardinian experience. Would visit again in a heartbeat ❤️”

“Wow! What a fantastic restaurant! We live local and we're looking for somewhere special for a birthday celebration and came across Ancient Grain online. After reading all the amazing reviews we booked in for last night (Friday Eve) and we were blown away! The restaurant is very intimate with a lovely atmosphere, service from the staff was on point, super friendly and very informative, making great recommendations on the wine and specials. We had the octopus and prawns with langoustines for starter which were both outstanding. We then had the catch of the day which was a beautiful sole, which came with greens and fried potatoes and the lamb chops with greens and potatoes, which was cooked to perfection, the lamb just fell off the bone and the little sauce it came with (lemon sauce) was incredible...you could taste the beautiful lamb in the sauce along with the lemon which cut through the lamb fat perfectly. We decided to share desserts....we went for the deep fried pie and the ice cream with espresso, both were delicious, the pie was something we had never eaten before and really enjoyed it, it was light, sticky (gorgeous sticky sweet honey) chewy...just perfect. This restaurant is truly special, it's authentic, romantic....you can tell how much love goes into producing the incredible dishes...they are full of heart ❤️ I think it's safe to say that we will be back very soon. 10/10 😁 Thank you x”
