About Flat White Kitchen

Flat White Kitchen is a cafe in Durham, set in a renovated 17th century townhouse at 40 Saddler St. The brunch menu includes Steak Benedict, a veggie fry up served with veggie black pudding, and pancakes in sweet and Korean chicken versions. Avocado toast comes with salmon and poached eggs on sourdough. On the drinks side, the pistachio latte pairs with pistachio oat milk, which is also sold by the carton. Gluten free brunch options sit alongside the main dishes. Inside, a communal table and plants run throughout, and the narrow entrance opens up towards the back. The cafe takes walk-ins only, and brunch usually has a queue for a table on busy days.

Customer Review Summary

Steak benedict is the dish diners raise most, with one reviewer calling the rare steak absolutely perfect. Close behind is the veggie fry up, where one diner wished the veggie black pudding were bigger because it was so good. The salmon avocado with poached eggs on sourdough, avocado toast, Korean chicken pancake and thick but still fluffy sweet pancakes also earn praise. Drinks get their own mentions: pistachio latte, iced strawberry matcha, turmeric latte, and a flat white called very good. One reviewer also bought pistachio oat milk by the carton. Reviewers describe friendly staff, plants everywhere, and a dimly lit, quirky room, and one coeliac found the gluten free brunch safe. The recurring complaint is the queue and wait for a table, and one reviewer wished staff would acknowledge people at the door. The sharpest criticism targets the steak: a medium order arrived well done and cut into five small pieces, though the team took it off the bill and added a complimentary side.

“The weather had turned grim during our visit to Durham. We wanted to sit in somewhere for some coffee and cake, most coffee shops had closed after 5pm and a random google search led us to this little gem, I’m glad we went in. The ladies behind the till were lovely and welcoming we had a pram with us and were a little apprehensiveness on approach as the entrance way looked tiny but thankfully opened up towards the back. The coffee and cake were perfect. The place itself was dimly lit, cosy and just gorgeous. The toilets were well equipped with a baby nappy changing station. This may sound strange to some but the toilet cubicles were super cool haah! built in to the stone structure of the building. Would highly recommend and will definitely be returning to try their food menu when next in Durham.”

“I go to Flat White every Friday evening, usually with my partner, and the team that are working are always so lovely. The food is unreal, the coffee is always spot on, and the attention to detail is lush!”

“Ordered a medium steak and got a well done instead - quite appalling considering it’s served cut up, it clearly looks overdone. Also portion was very small, only half a normal steak (5 pieces). Service recovery was good and offered to take it off the bill with a complimentary side.”

“Amazing gluten free brunch, super safe for coeliacs. Waited 20 minutes but really worth the wait. Bit of a wait for food but that can be explained by the fact it was packed I expect. Lovely people.”

“I had a lovely brunch here on a Sunday 26th April. I did have to wait 20 minutes for a table and they had only been open for 10 minutes when I joined the queue. I am glad I waited as the food was incredible and the staff were all amazing. I had a vegetarian fry up which I dont usually go for, but I am so glad I did. Definitely recommend coming here for brunch, as well as for drinks and sweet treats.”
