Customer Review Summary

Breakfast with a view over the lake is the main draw, with reviewers praising a full breakfast, a medium breakfast and a small Sunday lunch with a choice of meats as tasty, good value and more than enough. Several describe friendly staff, service with a smile and a peaceful spot with seating outside and in. One calls the brew rather nice, and one visitor from Canada came for the full breakfast. Service speed divides opinion. Some say food arrived quickly even at a busy lunchtime, but one breakfast diner waited a long time for a bacon butty and scrambled eggs while other tables filled, and the lake was not enough to keep a two year old entertained. Another found the tea weak as dish water and says the server took umbrage at a request for an extra tea bag, then seemed keen to close while turning customers away in the early afternoon. Even the diner who waited called the food nice and said it was pleasant to sit and watch the birds on the lake.

“Breakfast here for the first time today. Really welcoming staff, friendly atmosphere and probably the owner mentioning Judith Chalmers 😀. Couldn't do enough for me 🙏. Food with a view was lovely and I'll definitely be back. Had medium breakfast. Thanks 👍”

“Stopped off here for lunch, whilst on long drive from Kent coast to Durham.. First time back in my Birth town ,for 12 years. Always wanted to go here, it was quiet, friendly staff, great view over the lake. Had the small Sunday lunch, choice of meats, more than enough for me, and tasty. Ever that way again ,will pop in again. Askern has changed, but its my home town still.”
