Customer Review Summary

Live bands are what reviewers most often bring up, with several praising the music several times a week and one singling out a Sunday soul session. Close behind is the friendly bar staff and landlord, described as welcoming, helpful and well run, with one reviewer saying the pub has improved under new management and another noting it kept the place in very good condition. Real ales and good beer also earn repeated praise, while a pool table and TVs get a mention as extras. Reviewers call it very much a locals pub and a good little boozer, and one holds a family wake there. The one critical account comes from a daytime visitor who found it nearly empty, with most cask ales unavailable and the single one on oxidized, though that reviewer allowed it might be bad luck. Another reviewer returned years after their father had played there as the entertainer, and found the place much as it was.

“Used to come here years ago when my dad was the entertainer. Obviously under new management now who has kept the place pretty much the same as it was all those years ago in very good condition. We came here for my dad's wake it was like stepping back in time had a wonderful afternoon sharing old memories on what was a very special place to the whole family. Thank you for such great hospitality and making a very sad day for us all. The place is very quaint, quiet. Doesn't have car parking but no drink driving. Difficult entry for wheelchair users but it can be done. Would recommend.”

“Great venue to see live bands, good range of ales and a worthwhile pub to visit for local musical talent. Friendly and well run. Well worth visiting. M”

“Visited 2nd October 2023 late afternoon. Back street pub in the heart of Derby's West End, surrounded by flats and houses. Looks a little rough from the outside and the inside is perhaps a bit tired; however, it's perfectly clean as were the toilets with toilet roll, hot water and working hand dryers....it's sometimes those small things that mean the most. Fairly typical range of big brand lagers, cider and spirits on offer, including drinks offers, also 3 cask beers on our visit which seemed well kept and drank well. Staff were friendly and helpful as were the other customers. Pool table in the back room and there's a decent beer garden to the side, live music is on every/most Saturdays. A classic example of why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover.”
