About Mr Grundy's Tavern
Mr Grundy's Tavern is a pub and bistro on Ashbourne Road in Derby, spread across a quirky interior with a beer garden out front for sitting outside in warmer weather. The kitchen serves home-made food, with chili con carne on the menu that can be ordered without naan for diners managing different dietary needs. The manager walks gluten-free guests through the cross-contamination procedures and the staff bring separate cutlery, which keeps the process straightforward for coeliacs and others avoiding gluten. Real ale is on the bar, though the cider pumps are empty. Dogs are welcome inside, so the pub fits customers who would rather not leave their pets at home. A standard pub rhythm covers the rest of the visit, and the combination of indoor seating and the beer garden gives regulars a choice of where to settle depending on the weather.

Reviewers most often praise the beer garden and the range of real ales on tap, describing the interior as quirky and clean. A coeliac diner singles out the manager, who walked through the menu and assured gluten-free preparation, with a chili con carne enjoyed. One late lunch order arrived over fifty minutes after a companion's and was refunded. Another notes the absence of real cider. Several suggest sitting outside.

“Went here on a busy Friday evening. As a coeliac I was prepared not to be able to eat anything so I was delighted when the manager sat down with me and went through the menu and explained what was possible to have gluten free. I didn't have to explain anything about cross contamination - she knew it already. She assured me the chef would be very diligent and everything was home made. She even brought me separate cutlery. I had a delicious chili con carne (skipped the naan) but there were plenty of other options too. Thank you :)”

“Some real ale available, but sadly no Real Cider.”
- Michael Pettinger
“Friend's lunch was ordered 5 minutes after ours and hadn't arrived 50 minutes later so friend ended up getting a refund. Was told if you order at different time, this justifies a 30 minute wait for your food.”
