About The Bay Horse
The Bay Horse is a gastropub and English restaurant at 45 The Green in the village of Hurworth, Darlington, housed in a building that dates to the 1400s. A beer garden sits alongside the restaurant. The menu includes venison and pot roast chicken, and a share platter of desserts closes the meal. The wine list is extensive, with many wines by the glass and tasting notes, and the team can speak to both the menu and the wine selection. Dining is split between a downstairs room and a separate room upstairs. The pub takes walk-ins, and a set menu has been offered to large groups.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the mains at The Bay Horse, with the venison, chicken, salmon, pot roast chicken, sirloin with Yorkshire pudding and belly pork all singled out, along with fillet steaks described as delicious. Close behind are the desserts, where one diner loved a share platter and another listed the cheesecake, Greek yoghurt panna cotta and lemon sponge, though a different reviewer found the desserts' taste fell short of their presentation. Several describe friendly, knowledgeable staff who know the menu and the wine list, and the extensive wine list with many by the glass and helpful tasting notes gets particular mention. The setting and architecture are called lovely and elegant. One reviewer found the non-alcoholic selection very poor. The sharpest criticism comes from a diner who was seated upstairs in a room with one other table and found the monkfish starter two tiny croquettes lacking flavour, the truffle soufflé without truffle taste, and the risotto mushy, though the cod was cooked to perfection. One birthday diner had a booking-day mistake sorted out by a server.

“Sophie was a delight and her service was amazing. Super chatty and my my birthday meal special. Antonio was amazing too. Rectified an issue I’d made by booking the wrong day 🤦🏼♂️. He was so knowledgeable of the menu, the wines and the place itself. He’s great! Thank you! We had a lovely time!”

“Here’s a tight, Google‑friendly version that still feels warm and genuine: --- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another fantastic lunch at The Bay Horse. Party of four — three regulars and one first‑time visitor who was absolutely blown away. Starters of velouté and a divine crab & beetroot, followed by 4 delicious mains of salmon, pot roast chicken, sirloin beef with Yorkshire pudding, and belly pork (plus the essential dauphinoise). Desserts were outstanding — cheesecake, Greek yoghurt panna cotta, and a light, refreshing lemon sponge. With wine and coffee, £291 for four felt like great value. Consistently sublime — one of my favourite places to eat & service is always exceptional”

“The Bay Horse was an incredible experience. We stopped by for Sunday evening dinner having not visited the village before and it was just lovely. The atmosphere of the pub was brilliant and staff so friendly. It is a fantastic menu with clearly thought out dishes. The extensive wine list is appreciated plus that so many are available by the glass. The tasting notes are also helpful and we spent a good time poring over them for interest. The main meals were flawless and we’ll not forget them.. we had the venison and the chicken. We are already planning a trip back next weekend. The desserts were brilliantly presented but for us the taste fell short of the descriptions and the experience of the mains. Look forward to trying more of the menu and wines!”
