About Café at the Royal

On Chesterfield Rd, Café at the Royal is a cafe serving breakfast and lunch on a walk-in basis, with no need to book ahead. Toast arrives in a brown bag rather than on a plate, and coffee comes from a self-service machine at the counter. Customer Review Summary

Cooked breakfasts draw the most comment, built around sausage, egg, mushrooms and hash browns, and reviewers are mostly unhappy with them. One calls the hash brown lovely, and another praises a lovely breadcake, but a sausage and hash brown sandwich is described as cheap and tasteless. Beans and tomatoes are said to leave the hash browns soggy, and mushrooms arrive undrained. Close behind are complaints about staff, called rude, surly and unhelpful, including one reviewer who says they were shouted at over the counter for arriving before opening. Others mention small portions, such as a single scoop of curry and a tiny serving of mac and cheese, plus weak or luke warm coffee and a drinks machine that reportedly gives half a cup. One reviewer reports dirty, stained cups and says staff offered excuses rather than an apology. Vegetarian sausages had run out by mid-morning. The few happier reviewers praise jacket potatoes, sausage rolls, pasties and a chicken and leek pie. Two reviewers note that toast came in a brown bag instead of on a plate.

“Sausage sandwich hash brown tomato on a bread cake has to rank as one of the worst breakfast sarnies I've ever had, cheap products no taste bloody awful”

“All the food outlets here are no longer fit for service. The staff are surly and without any motivation, the food is poor, which given that its not only for patients and their families but also for NHS staff is shameful. The drinks machines are set to provide half a cup but charge for full cups. The only place worse is the "Retreat" at the Royal which is beyond embarrassing. This is not about providing a warm value for money good experience, its about cutting costs and profiteering Bring your own food, and even as an in patient do not eat here.”

“The past few times I have been to the canteen, I have received the most pitiful portions. Today I asked for a good portion, which I am happy to pay extra for. Yet I was given a 'one scoop' of curry which I ate in 5 bites. As someone who gets full with everything, this wasn't even enough as a starter. I took a look at my colleagues portion of Mac and cheese which looked to be about two tablespoons worth.”

“Made an honest mistake of walking in before they opened. I had been awake over 24 hours and had been sat with my disabled mum in the majors section of a+e and thought i would get myself and my mum a coffee. I was made to feel belittled by more than one cafe staff member who were not nice at all and all had something else to add to why i should have known they were closed. After the night i had i was obviously not thinking clearly and was close to tears because of the way i was spoken to. Please teach yourselves to be more compassionate, as you don't know what people are going through- although you should have a good idea with it being in a hospital. As I had already made the coffee I was going to see if I could leave the money for when they put the till on, but I didn't get a chance to speak as they were shouting over the counter at me like I was a criminal so I left the coffee and walked out.”
