About Happy Garden

Happy Garden is a Chinese restaurant in Cheltenham that opens every day, with evening service only. The menu features several salt and pepper dishes, including salt and pepper chips, which come with curry sauce on the side, and salt and pepper tofu. Szechuan tofu sits alongside them for diners who want another tofu option. Noodle, rice, curry and sweet and sour dishes make up the rest of the menu, giving the kitchen a spread beyond the salt and pepper plates.

Customer Review Summary

The complaints are more numerous and more detailed. Several call the food tasteless or bland, naming egg fried rice, chow mein and curry, and others describe overcooked, chewy duck and sweet and sour, soggy tofu, stale salt and pepper chips and a mushroom omelette that tasted only of soy sauce. Delivery was slow for some, and reviewers say phone calls went unanswered or to a full answerphone. One reviewer received chicken instead of prawn and undercooked prawn dumplings, was offered only a refund without replacement food or a swap, and found the driver would not hand over the correct dish until the wrong one was returned.

“Binned our entire order, such a waste of money. The food was terrible. The salt and pepper chips were stale and had clearly been cooked and left for hours. The deep fried tofu was was soggy and gloopy, I even tried to air fry it to make it better (didnt work). The squid was so gross and off putting and the crispy beef was below par too. Wish we never ordered here”

“We have used happy Garden for years and it's always been our go to However we ordered a meal for delivery and to be honest it wasn't the best the chowmein and egg fried rice taste just the same and the was very bland. Sorry but it wasn't good”

“Ordered tonight for the first time. Sorry to say I'm really disappointed. The food was tasteless, the duck and Singapore sweet and sour pour very overcooked and chewy and the egg fried rice stodgy and tasteless.”

“We ordered a Chinese this evening for my mother’s birthday and spent over £85 for our extended family. We collected due to the long delivery wait, which was fine, although we still had to wait again on arrival. When we got home, part of the order was wrong. We received a chicken dish instead of prawn, and the person it was for does not eat chicken. The prawn dumplings also appeared undercooked and were not edible. Contacting the restaurant was frustrating as the phone repeatedly went to answerphone with a full mailbox. When I eventually got through, it took several minutes to explain the issue. We were told we could either bring the food back for a refund but receive no replacement food, or wait for delivery and have the incorrect dish swapped. The delivery option was something I had to suggest myself and they were very reluctant to agree to it. No refund or goodwill was offered for the undercooked prawn dumplings, so we had to take those as a loss. When the replacement dish was delivered, the driver refused to hand over the correct item until the incorrect one was returned. Overall, very disappointing service, especially for a birthday meal and for the amount spent. Mistakes happen, but the way this was handled and the lack of customer care really let it down.”

“Yummy! A really good Chinese takeaway that really hit the spot! The mushroom chow mein had a great wok flavour and the shrimp curry was warming and had a depth to it. The Szechuan mixed vegetables was great and had some lovely fried tofu in! Worked really well with rice. The chips were standard and the curry sauce was a great accompaniment.”
