Quick info
About Chung Hwa
Chung Hwa is a Chinese takeaway in Cambridge, at 6 Green Side, cooking in the Hong Kong style. Sauce is mixed in at the end, and the chef can go light on it for anyone who prefers drier dishes. The menu includes Singapore noodle, house special chow mein and duck pancake rolls served with sauce. Fried rice and fried rice noodle sit alongside them for those building a larger order. The kitchen opens in the evenings only, Wednesday to Sunday, and stays closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Orders are taken at the counter.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the generous portions and food that is not greasy, with fried rice, fried rice noodle and house special chow mein singled out, along with Singapore noodle and beef with mushroom. Several say the dishes avoid the oily, heavy sauce of other Chinese takeaways, and one describes mixed vegetable Udon noodles as not greasy or salty at all. Close behind are the reasonable prices, the friendly service and a clean, refurbished shop, with a few noting the original owners have returned. Duck pancake rolls, satay chicken, tender beef and fried chicken also earn praise. The complaints are sharper but fewer. One reviewer found the sweet and sour chicken balls undercooked and still pink, and threw them away, though they called it a first. Another described salt and pepper king prawns that resembled chicken nuggets, lemon chicken that was wet and gluey, and a quarter duck that was mostly white fat. One reviewer notes some dishes arrive wet, which they attribute to Hong Kong style sauce mixed in at the end.

“Not ordered here for over a year as it was horrendous . Gave it a chance again as my normal one was shut due to holidays. Once again not impressed. The quality of food is awful. Ordered Salt and Pepper King prawns and they were tiny balls that looked like chicken nuggets and certainly were not Prawns. The Lemon chicken looked like microwave chicken. It was all wet and gluey. The 1/4 duck was more white fat than Duck. Has put me off Chinnese for a long time.”

“Friendly prompt service as always, yummy tender beef, value for money for sure! We love the Chinese vegetables dish too.”

“We ordered house special chow mein, beef mushroom and Singapore noodle last night. The portion is big for its price. They are very generous because there is more meat than noodles in both noodle dishes. Some people complaint some dishes are wet - I think this is the HK style as they always mix sauce at the end. Singapore noodle is very dry. If you don’t like it wet, I am sure you can tell the chef not to put too much sauce at the end.”

“Surprisingly large portion, healthy style: not too oily or salty as you could expect from Chinese takeaway, and reasonable price!”
