About Chinese Canteen
Chinese Canteen is a Chinese restaurant in Cambridge at 30 Bridge St, with a wide regional menu that draws on dishes from across China. The kitchen pairs that range with hand-pulled "oil poured" noodles, so diners who want noodles made by hand have a clear place to start. Rice dishes include special fried rice, and the fried rice section also covers seafood and egg versions. Vegetable dishes include claypot eggplant, and the menu lists vegan and vegetarian options for those who skip meat. Sweet and sour dishes come with either chicken or pork. The restaurant is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the fried rice, with the special fried rice and the seafood fried rice both praised, and one table ate its rice so fast they forgot to take photos. Pulled oil noodles, called oil poured noodles by another reviewer, come close behind. Also named are crispy prawn in chilli oil, sweet and sour pork, yu-xiang aubergine, claypot eggplant and pan fried dumplings. A few describe food arriving piping hot from the wok, served by friendly staff, and one mentions good vegan and vegetarian options and a well-liked iced plum tea. Consistency draws the main criticism. One reviewer found the noodle soup muddy, the mince strange and the tofu sheets stuck together, and says quality shifts from visit to visit. Another found the soup broth bland and not Cantonese style, and the chicken a little overdone. Portions are generous enough that one diner had to ask for a container to take leftovers home.

“We tried the crispy prawn in chilli oil dish which was sensational! Also tried the pan fried dumplings, Singapore noodles, tofu in black bean sauce and egg fried rice and everything tasted really good. Very happy with the food and staff were so sweet.”

“Really excellent Chinese food served piping hot straight out of the wok by friendly staff. We had the claypot egg plant, sweet & sour pork and braised tofu. The pork in particular was really well executed and so crispy and tangy. No wonder the students keep coming back!”

“By far the best Chinese food in Cambridge! The servers are all so friendly and the food is delicious. My partner says this is better than the restaurants we have been to in China. Great vegan and vegetarian options too. We like the oil poured noodles, yu-xiang aubergine, and egg and tomato (off menu)!! :)”
