About The Shire Inn

The Shire Inn is a carvery restaurant in Camborne, on Old Shire Inn, open daily. The carvery plate comes with a selection of meats, roast potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, Yorkshire puddings and gravy. Belly pork is among the starters, and a sizzler appears on the menu for those who want something other than the roast. Vegetarian and vegan options sit alongside the meat dishes. The dessert selection is large, with biscoff cheesecake among the choices, and portions run big enough that diners take leftovers home. The restaurant has a large garden and welcomes both dogs and families, so a group with children or a pet can eat together.

Customer Review Summary

The carvery is what most reviewers praise, with moist meats, roast potatoes described as cooked to perfection, and a wide spread of vegetables, stuffing and Yorkshires. Close behind are the desserts, where diners mention huge portions of biscoff, ferrero rocher and cherry cheesecake that they took home to finish. Starters such as the mushrooms and belly pork, plus scampi, a steak and a sizzler, also earn praise, and several say the staff are friendly, with one noting the kitchen swapped a sauce for garlic butter on request. Vegan and vegetarian options and dog-friendly seating are welcomed, and one reviewer suggests booking. The criticism is sharper but less frequent. Two reviewers found the carvery disappointing, citing dry turkey and beef, overdone roast potatoes, bland cauliflower cheese, frozen Yorkshire puddings, watery vegetables and food that was barely warm, and one felt it was overpriced. Another received a burnt burger and raw chips. One reviewer found smoking near the outside tables a problem. One stranded traveller was let in early for a drink and offered a phone charge.

“We stopped here and it wasn't open yet after a awful day and desperately looking for somewhere to eat.. the Manager let us sit for a drink until 5:30pm until food was ready! They were so kind and helpful the owner offered to help us with somewhere to stay ( a friend )if we couldn't find accommodation and let me charge my phone! The vegan food was incredible and the staff were brilliant!!”

“My wife and I were staying in Cambourne last week and decided to have a meal out. We drove past the Shire Inn and it looked nice, so we phoned for a reservation for about an hour later. Such a great decision! We both had a lovely meal, Delicious scampi, lovely chips, Super mushroom starter, and prawn cocktail for my wife. Ice cream to finish. All perfect, lovely friendly staff, and very reasonable price indeed. Nice atmosphere, not too cramped, and a good big car park. A perfect evening!!”

“10/10 experience! We stayed in Clowance and visited this pub one evening for food and we were so happy with the service the quality of the food and the atmosphere! Four of our party had carvery and there was a great selection of meats and generous portions and the staff couldn't do enough for you. The steak was cooked perfectly and the sizzler was also grea. The selection of puddings was vast and they all looked so tempting! We settled on biscoff cheesecake and ferrero rocher cheese cake and both were delicious. The dessert portions were huge and we took half home for the next days pudding! After such a lovely meal the next night we just had to return for round two and the same amazing service and food was received. I didnt fancy any of the sauces with the sizzler but the chef asked if i wanted garlic butter instead, such a simple thing but meant a lot and made my food taste amazing! Very sad we are only holidaying here and cant make this our regular food spot. Welcoming staff, great food and dog friendly, couldnt ask for more 🥰”

“Good on them for having a decent vegan menu. Nice staff too. Unfortunately the food I was served was awful. Burnt burger and raw chips. The pizza dirty chips thing sounded good but was just chips with chopped tomatoes and two slices of cheese for £16. Truly a disgrace to the world of pub food. Frodo and Sam would have kept eating the lembas bread if this was the only pub in the shire”
