Quick info
About The Bay Tree Restaurant
The Bay Tree Restaurant is a hotel restaurant in Burford on Sheep St, set inside a historic house. Fireplaces sit in the dining areas, and a fire burns there in winter. The menu includes artichoke soup, and a wine menu offers pairings for dishes. Afternoon tea comes in two forms: a champagne tea, and a cream tea with scones, cream and jam. Guests who prefer a less formal setting can eat in the bar area. The restaurant is part of the hotel, so a meal can sit alongside a stay on the same property.

Customer Review Summary
Afternoon tea draws the most mentions, split sharply: a champagne tea for an anniversary and a cream tea with fresh scones, cream and jam earned warm words, while another reviewer found the tea sandwiches soggy and stuck to the napkin and the scones small and too hard. Close behind, staff are repeatedly described as attentive and helpful, and diners praise the fireplaces, the cozy rooms and the wine menu with a pairing for nearly every dish. Artichoke soup and chips get a high mark, and a Sunday lunch is called fabulous. The caveats carry weight. One diner on a birthday meal reported no one at the front desk, slow dishes and a coffee that never arrived, while another said the food arrived cold and mostly went back, and a third noted staff chatting loudly, dead table flowers and the optional service charge. One reviewer says the place seems under new management and has gone quiet. Another recalls staff chasing a departing car to return forgotten headphones.

“Disappointing, I booked a meal for myself and my boyfriend here to celebrate his birthday. Let’s just say the food does not reflect the price and service is poor. Staff are young, inexperienced and unprofessional. No one at the front desk when you first walk in, had to find a waiter myself to be seated, everything took forever to come out, at the end of the meal I ordered a coffee which never came and the waiters ended up saying it’s because it’s busy, there was just a few tables inside and a few little groups of guests having drinks so really no excuse. We honestly could have walked out without paying because no one was paying attention to us, but we’re decent people so asked for the bill, I really wish I didn’t because it was a whopping £126 with the coffee and service charge taken off for 3 courses and 1 drink each. I would avoid this place and spend your hard earned money at much better establishments.”

“My wife and I had an afternoon champagne tea to celebrate our 40th anniversary. We both had a really nice time. The food was great and the staff were amazing. They made our afternoon very special. We pretty much had the restaurant to ourselves hence only four stars for atmosphere 😂.”

“Had a lovely cream tea, lovely and cozy with a lovely warm fire in the winter. Lovely fresh scones with cream and jam. Staff were very attentive and polite. We left headphones in the restaurant and one of the staff kindly found us while we were driving away to return it.”

“Neighborhood Gem Ambience: so many fireplaces to choose from, great decorations, warm & cozy, and even better than lamb next door Service: remembered me from day to day and even my choices; prompt and attentive and made everyone feel welcome from large groups to single diners. Food: delicious: my only suggestion is to serve a piece of bread and butter with your delicious soup! --what a shame!”

“Only one bar staff member as it was a quiet evening eating in the bar area but he was excellent. The food was delicious and arrived quickly. Highly recommend.”
