About Appleby's Fish & Chips

Trading only Thursday to Saturday, Appleby's Fish & Chips is a fish and chips shop on High St in Bristol, which means a visit takes planning around a three-day week. Fish and chips is the main order, with cod available in large portions and chips left with the skin on rather than peeled. Mushy peas and curry sauce are ordered alongside. Service runs from a counter, where prices are listed on a board, and no bookings are taken. Most orders leave the shop to be eaten at home. Because food is cooked to order, a queue and a wait build at busier times. High chairs are available for families bringing young children.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers split on the cod and chips, and the batter and the chips are what they raise most. Praise centers on crispy chips with skin on, including "the lil crispy bits", and on cod with a well-battered, not too greasy coating. One reviewer calls the curry sauce the best in years, and another describes a freshly cooked large cod with large chips and mushy peas as delicious. Several mention friendly service and portions that are just right.

“My wife and I fancied fish for Good Friday. Ordered a large cod, large chips and mushy peas to bring home and share and it was freshly cooked and delicious.”
  • Lyn Shepherd
“Chips cold and very thin piece of fish Nothing but greasy batter. At £12 what a disappointment. No telephone no to call so won't go there again as not the first time. Such a shame as used to be very good”
  • Scott Dale
“Sadly, we had to return two lots of fish and chips due to the shocking pieces of fish we were served. Grey, undercooked and just a mush of yellow non crispy batter. Bitterly disappointed. There was an offer of a replacement but we decided to have a refund. Sad to say but this chippie has lost it's way recently and what used to be the go to fish and chip shop has now lost more custom.”
  • Graham Reece
“I love their Chips, Fish is not too greasy and the batter just right. Friendly and the portions are just right, no wastage. It's a pity they are only open 1/2 the week.”

“Great chips, love the lil crispy bits. Curry sauce was the best I've had in years. Great service and perfect balance between clean and tasty. Will be back soon”
