About Squires
Squires is a fish restaurant in Braunton, on Exeter Rd, run by one family and serving North Devon since 1969. The core order is fish and chips with mushy peas, and curry sauce is available as an option. The menu goes beyond fish, with burgers and desserts for those who want something different. Because suppliers change, ingredients can occasionally be altered, so guests with allergen or dietary concerns are asked to call the restaurant before ordering. A car park sits opposite the restaurant.

Customer Review Summary
Diners return for the fish and chips, praising the cod with light, crisp batter and flaky flesh, often with mushy peas on the side. Close behind are the generous portions, with several saying extra chips or an extra piece of fish was offered at no charge. The curry sauce splits opinion: one reviewer calls it stunning and not traditional, while a family at another table said it wasn't for them. Desserts such as the knickerbocker glory and an affogato get a mention, and the staff are described as friendly. Several note the restaurant is always busy and suggest booking, though one party of five without a reservation was squeezed in. Beyond the classics, the menu draws mixed comments. One reviewer found the fish a little greasy, another called the veggie Mexicana burger very dry, and the salt and pepper squid portion was ridiculously small. Included drinks were described as flat. One reviewer, who had been offered an extra half portion of fish, still filled the plate.

“Always wanted to try this place, finally got a round to it. I had fish and chips with mushy peas my son and wife had the same but with curry sauce, my daughter had a spicy chicken burger.we also had a octopus starter, 3 cokes and 1 beer....price was a little over £80. My mushy peas were nice, chips tasty but I think that my fish was a little to greasy for my taste, but the batter was good, my wife and son both said the curry sauce wasn't for them whilst my daughter said the spicy burger was great. Overall it was ok, nothing exceptional but ok. Would we rush back, well im not sure.”

“Excellent fish and chips, very generous portions at a very reasonable price. My fish chips and mushy peas came with an extra half portion of fish, as my portion was so call a bit small (although it filled my plate.) With a drink included it was cheaper than takeout at other places. 10/10 for the service. Will be calling in next time I’m in Braunton”

“Always very good food, great fish and chips. Always busy so I recommend to book a table especially in the summer. More than just fish and chips with plenty of choice on the menu. I can see why this place wins awards, well worth it visit. Their curry sauce is not a traditional sauce but is absolutely stunning”

“Click and collect service all good, and very efficient! However, food other than the classic fish and chips was a bit disappointing. The veggie Mexicana burger was very dry and the portion of salt and pepper squid for £6 was ridiculously small….”
