Quick info
About The Shepherd and Dog
The Shepherd and Dog is a family-run countryside pub and restaurant in Billericay, with a large dining room inside. The menu includes a steak, ale and horseradish sauce pie served with seasonal vegetables and chips. The Sunday roast also comes as a sharing roast for a group. The pudding menu carries several specials alongside the sticky toffee pudding. A marquee in the garden hosts events such as weddings and wakes, with a buffet, so the pub can handle celebrations and farewells on site. Reservations are required, and dogs are welcome in the bar section. From Thursday to Sunday, guests must be over 21 unless they come with family.

Customer Review Summary
Puddings come up most, from the sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie to a homemade snickers cheesecake, and one diner advises saving room for the pudding menu with its several specials. Mains follow close behind. The steak, ale and horseradish sauce pie, lamb cutlets, chicken supreme forestiere and liver and bacon are all singled out. A party of four describes a sharing Sunday roast with loads of meat, plenty of roast potatoes and more than enough gravy. Service is praised in nearly every review as friendly, attentive, polite and quick, and one waitress is credited with a helpful suggestion on what to order. Two families describe holding a wake and a wedding here, citing a helpful events team, drinks served with no waiting, a buffet guests commented on and the garden marquee. Others like the pub garden and the large restaurant inside. One returning couple mentioned their second visit to a waiter, who passed it on to the owner, and she came over to thank them as they left.

“We honestly couldn’t have chosen a better place to host our wedding. From start to finish, Rebecca and her incredible team went above and beyond to make our day perfect. The professionalism was outstanding, yet everything felt so warm, relaxed, and genuinely personal. It was the little touches that made all the difference, nothing was too much trouble, and every detail was handled with such care. The food was absolutely amazing, the atmosphere was just perfect, and the whole environment felt so welcoming for us and all our guests. Everyone has commented on how fantastic it all was! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making our special day truly unforgettable! It was everything we could have ever asked for and more. Kerry & Jake”

“This is a pub with a big car park and a restaurant section. Dogs allowed in bar section only. Service was really attentive. The food was all great, especially the liver and bacon! Save room for pudding, there's an excellent pudding menu with several specials.”

“We recently held my mum’s wake at the Shepherd & Dog, and from start to finish everything was handled so well. Becky was incredibly helpful when organising the event, making lots of thoughtful suggestions that we hadn’t even considered, which really helped make the day run smoothly. We chose to use the marquee in the garden, which was a lovely setting. On the day itself, the staff were fully prepared and ready for us. The two staff members assigned to our party, Lou and Ryan, were exceptional — they made sure drinks were served quickly and efficiently, with no waiting at all. The buffet was excellent, and so many of our guests commented on how good the food, venue, and staff were. On behalf of the whole family, we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone at the Shepherd & Dog for helping make a difficult day so much easier”
