About Sunrise Cafe

Sunrise Cafe is a traditional greasy-spoon cafe in Beckenham, at 115 Croydon Rd, right next to an MOT garage. The kitchen cooks a full English breakfast in the old-style cafe manner, and a dippy egg is among the breakfast items. For something other than breakfast, there is an omelette with chips and beans, served with a mug of tea. There is no table service. Customers go up to the counter to order and pay. The cafe opens daily and serves during the daytime only.

Customer Review Summary

The criticism is sharper in a few reviews. One diner calls the breakfast sausage the cheapest, most tasteless they have had, and also mentions cheap bacon. One parent reports repeated dirty looks from staff over a toddler's noise and a children's menu bendy sausage that arrived as a different, strange-tasting sausage. Two reviewers describe the atmosphere as unfriendly, and both point to hostile owner replies to negative reviews. One notes there is no parking on site and no table service, so customers order and pay at the counter.

“Bright, clean cafe with friendly, efficient service. Ordered omelette, chips and beans plus a mug of tea, very good portions, only £10.80. Recommended.”

“I paid a visit to this cafe a few days ago after a hospital appointment. I found the atmosphere quite unfriendly and the food average. I wasn't going to leave a review until I saw the awful responses to reviews from the owner. I notice the slightest "negative" review warrants a very unfriendly response. What happened to constructive criticism ? or just being able to leave a review without being berated by the owner. To speak of an innocent child the way you have in a review that I read is frankly quite horrible and isn't really acceptable from a business owner. Have a nice day”

When the girls finished there food the lovey owner hayley came and gave them a lollipop each which made my girls very happy would definitely come again, great value for money and a lovely little cafe.”

“Awful experience.. not child-friendly Our experience at Sunrise Cafe was genuinely unpleasant and disappointing. We visited with our young child, who was making a small amount of normal toddler noise. Instead of any understanding or basic courtesy, we were met with repeated dirty looks and obvious judgment from a male member of staff and the waitress. It was uncomfortable, rude, and made it very clear that families with children are not welcome there. What made this even more ridiculous is that other customers were interacting with our son, laughing with him, and showing absolutely no signs of annoyance. The only people with an issue were the staff. The food was equally poor. We ordered the bendy sausage from the children’s menu for our son, yet what arrived was not what was advertised, was extremely low quality, and tasted strange. Why put a bendy sausage on the menu if you don’t actually have it, then bring out a completely different sausage with no explanation? Our son refused to eat it. Serving food of that standard to children is unacceptable. There is no table service, you have to go up and order and pay yourself, which was not explained clearly. The atmosphere was cold, unwelcoming, and lacking even the most basic level of hospitality or customer care. To put this into perspective, we went to Cafe Treat the following week in Downham and the experience was the complete opposite. Warm, friendly, welcoming to families, excellent service, and far better food. The contrast couldn’t have been clearer. Sunrise Cafe needs serious improvement in customer attitude, food quality, and overall standards. RESPONSE TO SUNRISE OWNER Your response is completely inappropriate and frankly embarrassing for a business owner. Firstly, you are pushing a false narrative about a 15-month-old child. Our child was not “screeching” or “ear-piercing.” Other patrons in your café were smiling, interacting with him and laughing with him — clearly showing no annoyance whatsoever. The only people who appeared uncomfortable were your staff. Exaggerating a baby’s normal noise to justify poor attitude is unfair, misleading, and deeply inappropriate. Secondly, if there is “no bendy sausage on the kids menu,” then that directly contradicts what was presented to us when ordering. Regardless, what was served was poor quality, tasted strange, and was brought out with no explanation. Deflecting rather than taking accountability does not change that experience. Thirdly, publicly attacking customers, referencing unrelated Facebook groups, and making personal remarks about family members is not professional conduct for any business owner. For clarity: the Facebook post was shut down by the group administrators, not deleted by us, due to the lynch-mob mentality that developed in the comments. Also, this Google review was posted first, not “instead” of anything. Misrepresenting the timeline and facts only further undermines the credibility of your response. We are entitled to leave an honest review based on our real experience. Attempting to dismiss it by attacking a baby and rewriting events says far more about the business than it does about us.”

“Went here randomly have never been before. Was glad to see a cafe like this as beckenham is more known for its pastries and coffees rather than full English breakfast. I was pleasantly surprised food was delicious, fresh, hot, polite & quick service. Decently priced aswell”
