About Fremington Quay

Fremington Quay is a cafe and tea room in Barnstaple, set on the Tarka Trail at Fremington. Visitors arrive by bike, on foot along the South West Coast Path, or by car. Inside, a small mini museum covers Fremington and its pottery, and a lookout over the river is reached by stairs, so a stop can include something to see as well as something to eat. Breakfast, light bites and lunch each have their own menu, and a specials board sits alongside them. Lunch runs to soup, baguettes, jacket potatoes and wraps, including a prawn baguette and a sweet chilli and halloumi wrap. A cake cabinet holds a range of sponges, with coffee and walnut among them. Orders go through a till, and a queue forms when it is busy.

Customer Review Summary

Walkers and cyclists on the Tarka Trail make up much of the praise, and the cake cabinet is the most frequent draw. Reviewers name coffee and walnut sponge, lemon drizzle, a Scotch Egg Creme Egg brownie and buttercream that tasted homemade, often paired with a cappuccino or latte. Close behind are generous lunches: a huge baked potato with chilli beef, a crab sandwich described as stacked, a prawn baguette, and a sweet chilli and halloumi wrap. One diner thought a pasty should have come with gravy. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and accommodating even when busy, and one barista asked exactly how a coffee should be made. The river view and a small museum section with a lookout are also mentioned. The caveats are small. Inside seating is limited, one reviewer found the baked potato expensive before the portion changed their mind, and another wanted menus outside so benches diners could choose before reaching the till. One reviewer bought handmade dog bones for a puppy.

“Brilliant stop. Cake was amazing, buttercream just like my Nan used to do it- delicious 😋. Lady was lovely and asked us exactly how we wanted our coffee. Very considerate and much appreciated. Will definitely be back 🍰 ☕️.”

“The food is exceptional I had the Crab sandwich! Which was huge! They did not skimp on the crab, it was stacked! The children had jacket potato which they thoroughly enjoyed. The view is beautiful and easily accessible by bike and car. We cycle because the view is awsome! Its a must go to place!”

“I don't write many reviews but this one is worth it. After an epic drive from the Barnstaple direction due to road works I finally got to the Quay. Whilst waiting for others I decided to get some lunch. I ordered baked potatoe with chillie beef and coffee. My initial thoughts were that it was expensive for a potatoe but ordered anyway. I can say the food was well worth it. A huge potato with loads of toppings that didn't run out before the potato did. It tasted lovely and I would definitely eat there again. The stand out point is that the 2 girls/women/ladies (what ever is correct nowadays) were naturally friendly. I mean that as the friendliness didn't come across as manufactured or put on. They genuinely seemed like lovely people and happy to help. The only thing I would suggest is having some menus outside as I had to make a very quick decision when I got to the till so as not to hold the queue up. Note, this is not the case if you eat inside, only if sitting on the benches outside.”

“Delicious food and very generous portions. Highly recommend the sweet chilli and halloumi wrap that I had. The ploughman's lunch that my Mum had looked amazing, as did the prawn baguette that our friend had. Dad had a pasty, which should've come with gravy I think if it was up to me, however it went down well anyway. Beautiful location for lunch”
