About Kiyoto Sushi Cockfosters

Kiyoto Sushi Cockfosters is a Japanese restaurant in Barnet, at 18 Cockfosters Parade, and it opens daily. The kitchen makes its sushi fresh to order, including a dragon roll with shrimp tempura. Gyoza come in duck, chicken and vegetable versions, so the dumpling order can be meat or meat-free. Chicken katsu curry covers the hot plates, and Japanese pickles and seaweed are available as sides. Vegetarian and vegan diners will find a vegetable crunch roll on the menu among the dishes made without meat or fish. The dining room is small, with a limited number of tables. Lychee and mango juices are on the drinks list.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the sushi, describing it as fresh, made to order and generous in portion. Diners name the vegetable crunch roll, the dragon roll with shrimp tempura and cucumber, and side dishes of Japanese pickles and seaweed, while others return for the chicken katsu curry and the gyoza. Service is described as quick and friendly, with one party squeezed in at a packed table instead of being sent to takeaway. The lychee and mango juices also get a mention. The restaurant is small and gets busy and noisy, and a few suggest pre-booking because tables are limited. One reviewer found the deluxe spider roll fine for a first try but not worth repeating, and felt rushed over the menu. The sharpest complaint comes from a vegetarian who reports two visits where the server confused vegetarian and duck gyoza, and on the latest they had partly eaten what they feared was duck before the mix-up was sorted out.

“I’ve been to Kiyoto a few times in the past and have always really enjoyed the food, which is why I’m genuinely disappointed to be leaving this review. I’ve been vegetarian for 7 years due to a genuine fear of eating meat, and this isn’t something I’m casual about. Unfortunately, I had an issue on a previous visit where the server seemed confused about which gyoza were vegetarian and which were chicken, and my partner even had to try them to work out which were which. I decided to give it another try because I do genuinely love the food, particularly the chilli ramen soup with tofu. On this visit, my partner ordered duck gyoza and I ordered vegetable gyoza. We were initially brought two portions of what was told to be one vegetarian and one duck, this later appeared to be two duck gyoza. Later, we were brought another portion which we were told was duck, but this actually turned out to be the vegetarian gyoza. The worrying part was that by this point I had already partially eaten the gyoza I had been given. My partner and I then realised that the gyoza I had eaten were darker than the ones that were later identified as the duck but were actually the vegetarian. This left me extremely concerned that I may have been given and eaten meat. I completely understand that mistakes can happen, but when someone has clearly ordered vegetarian food, repeatedly mixing up vegetarian and meat dishes is a serious issue. For me personally, it has now made me very anxious about returning, despite genuinely loving the food. I really hope this can be addressed with staff, particularly around clearly identifying vegetarian and meat dishes before they reach the table. I would love to feel comfortable coming back because, aside from this experience, I’ve always enjoyed Kiyoto’s food.”

“I have been wanting sushi for over a year and i just happened to walk by it and I was like I must try. The place was mostly empty so there was no waiting, it was around 1:30-2 so it was expected. They have alot of options it was hard to decide. The only reason they lost a star is that they didnt give me enough time to look through the menu and to let me decide what I wanted so I just grabbed one of special rolls (it was good either way). I got the deluxe spider roll which I have never heard of. It was good which had cooked shrimp in it and avacado, and caviar, teriyaki sauce and mayo on top. Its ok for the once but I wouldnt get it again. There are just so many better options on the menu. The gyoza was good as well!”

“One of the best sushi restaurants in London hands down. It’s rare to see fish quality this fresh, with portions this generous, and prices this reasonable. The service was exceptional. Only problem, too far from me. The chain has no store in central London, what a shame.”
