About Chequers on the Green

Chequers on the Green is a Grade II listed pub on Ashford Rd in Ashford, and its building carries parts that date to medieval times, with an inn on the site since 1442. Inside, oak beams run through the pub, which sits across the road from the village green. The kitchen serves food through the day, with halloumi fries as a starter and a homemade steak and ale pie among the mains. Dessert includes banoffee pie, and the menu also covers seafood and vegetarian dishes. Local ales and lagers are on the bar, alongside a selected wine list. Dogs are welcome inside, where a quiet corner is set aside for them and doggy ice cream is offered.

Customer Review Summary

The banoffee pie draws the most repeated praise, called a standout dessert and one of the best a reviewer had eaten. Close behind is the homemade steak and ale pie, described as full of filling and a generous portion. Reviewers also name halloumi fries, pan fried scallops and prawns in a puff pastry case, a tender well done steak, Malva pudding with caramelised pecans, and an apple and rhubarb crumble with hot crème anglaise. A cappuccino gets praise as better than expected from a pub. Staff are called friendly and welcoming, with celebrations for an anniversary and a birthday going smoothly. The complaints are specific. One diner with a booked table found the Sunday roast sold out, and another found service slow on a quiet day after dessert menus were handed over and forgotten, though the waitress apologised. One felt the small crumble serving was not worth the price. One reviewer called a glass of wine acetic and described a dismissive response from the licensees when raising it. One couple who brought their dog sat inside in a quiet corner, and he got doggy ice cream.

“My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary here on a weekenight and could not fault anything. Thank you to all the staff for being attentive, listening to our requests and delivering an amazing service. The food was delicious and one of the best banoffee pies I have had. Thank you.”

“Myself and my husband came here on 02/10 and we had such a lovely evening. The staff were all so friendly. Special mention for Ashley and Diane for chatting with us and being so welcoming. I had the homemade steak and ale pie and it was delicious, one of the best pies I’ve ever eaten- full of filling and the pastry was amazing. Portion was great too (I ended up sharing it with my husband and still being full). My husband had the burger with sweet potato fries and also really enjoyed this. We got one drink and a main each and spent about £20-£30 per person. A lovely date night spot as the atmosphere was nice and they had cosy areas if you just wanted a drink too. We can’t wait to go back and we will definitely be bringing our friends!”

“please excuse my lack of punctuation as i have severe arthritis in my hands. having previously attended and been treated with respect by the staff in this lovely location, we visited on saturday 29th august. the young lady at the bar was inexperienced but polite. there was an incident with the landlady diane ward. i tried to call to discuss and got not response. i then rang shepherd neame. they advised me to deal directly with andrew ward. he was on the attack and as aggressive with his comments and attitude as his wife. he basically told me all his problems and that they often get people wanting a refund [perhaps that is because the products or service are not up to standard]. he is very disparaging about the public who after all provide their livelihood. i do hope the £18.35 taken from us which included a decent pint, which we were happy to pay for, and a disgusting acetic glass of wine, makes them happy. if they have any integrity, which i doubt as money seems more important than customer service, i am happy for them to donate it to the fat ox in tenderden [also a shepherd neame pub] for their charity work by the tenants who support of all residents in the area with good food and a pleasant attitude, sadly lacking in high halden. as the tenants who run the pub both seem incapable of behaving as well as their staff i have referred the matter to the business development manager mr will hilton of shepherd neame. customers should not to have to tolerate rudeness like this at no matter what the issue.”

“A beautiful Oak beamed English pub across the road from the village green. After having a refreshing drink at lunchtime we decided to book a table for dinner that evening and we weren't disappointed. My wife had a starter as a main Pan Fried Rye Bay Scallop & Creamy Garlic Prawns in a Puff Pastry Case which she thoroughly enjoyed. I a steak cooked well done as I like it and so tender and moist....spot on. For dessert we both had South African Malva Pudding topped with caramelised pecans which was a delight. The staff and Chef were brilliant and If we're ever in the area again then we'll definitely dine here again.”

“2nd visit to here. Delicious food. Felt the service was a little slow considering it wasn't busy. I think the young waitress had given us the dessert menus and forgotten. She did apologise. Certainly didn't feel the crumble small serving was worth the price.”
