About Rocking Horse Cafe & Gallery
Rocking Horse Cafe & Gallery is a cafe in Alnwick on Rock Midstead, open daily and 800 yards from the A1, just off the B6347. The kitchen serves homemade food built on local produce, with Pilgrims Coffee on the drinks side. Cakes are home-baked, including a lime, courgette and pistachio cake, and a specials board carries items such as beef and lamb burgers. Next to the cafe, a gallery shows Richard Dunwoody's photography alongside work by other local craftspeople, and a small shop and an antiques area are open for browsing. The garden beyond the main room looks out over farmland and has a dog agility course, so visitors with dogs have space to play. The owners' Collies are on site, and fresh water is set out at several points inside the cafe.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the dog friendly welcome, with several saying their dogs were made to feel as welcome as they were and one making friends with the owners' Collies. Home made food and cakes come close behind, including a beef burger from the specials board with a salad instead of fries, a lime, courgette and pistachio cake, a victoria sponge and an afternoon tea described as the nicest one reviewers have had. Others praise the coffee and a huge pot of tea. The garden gets credit for its views of surrounding farmland, and the gallery and small shop with forged art draw mentions too. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming. One reviewer says the service is attentive but not intensive and adds that the place is not for people in a rush or looking for the very fancy. The one critical review, a three star visit, describes a tatty room with stored items piled on a corner table, a garden with a patchy, mole-scarred look, and prices that felt high for just a scone.

“We just got a take out of coffees and cakes but would have loved to hung around if we had more time. They have a cafe garden area beyond the main cafe which is great for views of surrounding farm lands but also great if you have dogs. They'll come to you with a menu so just grab a seat. Immediately around the same vicinity, they have some other arts and crafts shops, metal works, wood work, fashion and jewelry etc.”

“We were doing some sightseeing in the area with my parents and saw this place on the map. Had good reviews and menu looked good. Nice cafe with friendly owners (and lovely well behaved dogs!) Large cafe style menu with plenty of options. I love beef burgers but they don't have any on their menu, so I had decided the day before that I was going to have the lasagne (which I was sure I would enjoy) However, when we arrived we were shown a specials board which had beef and lamb burgers on it, so I had to have the beef burger, and I am very glad I did! Perfectly cooked burger, still juicy and a great meaty taste. Came with plenty of cheese and really really thin bacon (almost like crispy pancetta) which was perfect. Instead of fries, the burger came with an amazing salad (so felt much healthier) They also have a large selection of homemade cakes so we had to get some to take away! I got a pice of the lime, courgette and pistachio cake, and my wife got a piece of the victoria sponge. Both were excellent. Perfectly cooked, lovely texture and flavour. Will definitely visit again when we're in the area. Highly recommend.”

“Our first visit here despite living locally! Fantastic find. Beautiful garden space outside with great views - so peaceful. I had one of the home baked cakes. Delicious! Lovely young server - very warm and welcoming. Dog friendly and we made friends with the owners’ Collies! Will definitely return.”

“Cute and cozy place to calm down. The Food was delicious and local, the service attentive but not intensive. Not recommended for people being in a rush or looking out for the very fancy. Here you get a down to earth atmosphere which I appreciate a lot.”

“The Rocking Horse Café was a convenient stop on the way to Bamburgh, helped along by its good reviews and adequate parking we decided to give it a try. Service was acceptable, food was fine, and nothing arrived late or cold — but nothing particularly stood out either. It sits firmly in the category of perfectly serviceable. Where things slipped a little was the general presentation. The café felt a bit tatty, with piles of stored items on one table in the corner, effectively taking it out of use and giving the room that “temporary storage area” vibe. Not disastrous, just… noticeable. The garden, which we didn’t use thanks to the weather, looked like it had been fighting a losing battle with a mole uprising. Even from the doorway it had that slightly shabby, uneven look that suggests nature is winning on points. Prices for what we had — just a scone/snack — felt on the higher side, especially for somewhere that could really benefit from a tidy up. With a tidy, a declutter, a bit of TLC and a truce with the moles, it could easily live up to its reviews. As it stands, it’s fine, but not somewhere I’d rush back to.”
