About The Plough
The Plough is a pub, inn and restaurant in Alnwick, set in an 1896 townhouse at 24 Bondgate Without. The kitchen runs a Tex Mex-style Smokehouse menu built around a smoked grill. A Smokehouse platter comes with a selection of meats and accompaniments, made for sharing, and a smoked tomahawk steak is also on the menu. The Smokehouse evening plays country music. An alternative bar menu offers dishes such as cottage pie for diners who want something outside the smoked grill. The bar pours cocktails and a range of beers. A dedicated gluten free fryer is there for coeliac diners. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the smokehouse cooking, from a shared platter and a smokehouse Sunday roast with pork to a tomahawk steak, with friendly, attentive service close behind. One notes a dedicated gluten free fryer. Complaints are fewer: one found the bar menu off and a veggie burger tepid, and another found hardly any taps on and no staff at a deserted bar.

“We booked this for an evening meal last minute after the Market Tavern let us down announcing they had no reservation for us. The Plough was clean and tidy but on the day we visited it predominantly had a Tex Mex smoked grill menu . Their bar menu was not operating- I asked the waitress who confirmed so the alternative choice was curry, cottage pie, chilli. I had the cottage pie which was excellent but the Mrs had a veggie burger from the Tex Mex menu which was tepid on arrival at the table- she didn't eat it, just the accompaniments. The staff were lovely and attentive, the decor and surroundings of the bar area were fine. Would we go back, unlikely if they are trying to constantly force the tex menu on you, and which some dishes were expensive. While I appreciate mistakes happen but a check on the temperature of the food- not the plates should be a basic, yes we could have complained but any place we visit gets one chance. If it fails we take our money elsewhere. I noted 2 other groups who were discussing the lack of choice - they all had one of the alternatives, not the TM menu.”

“Not lived in Alnwick long and it’s took a little while to try out The Plough. From the moment we stepped in the door the service was exceptional. Staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. They looked after both ourselves and our dog and checked throughout our meal that we had everything we needed. We went on the Smokehouse evening and had the platter to share. The meal was superb, great selection of meats and accompaniments that were beautifully cooked and presented. Couldn’t finish it all but we were given boxes to take our leftovers home. The restaurant was very welcoming, the tables were clean and nicely laid out and we enjoyed the country music to add to the Smokehouse theme. Overall excellent experience, please pass on our gratitude to the excellent front of house staff and chef. We’ll be back”
