About Golden Kitchen

A 135-dish menu sits behind the counter at Golden Kitchen, a Chinese takeaway on Ock St in Abingdon, giving regulars plenty of room to move beyond the usual order. Alongside familiar British-Chinese cooking, the kitchen lists Four Happiness and Mandarin Tender Beef, with Crispy Won Ton and Satay Chicken On Skewers among the starters. Crispy aromatic duck arrives with cucumber, spring onion and pancakes, and black bean sauce runs through several plates, including beef with green pepper and roast duck. Chow mein, Singapore noodles and crispy shredded beef fill out the noodle and rice section, which also covers egg fried rice and mushroom rice, and traditional curry sauce is on hand. Prawn crackers come with larger orders. Ordering is walk-in, placed at the counter rather than booked ahead, and the shop opens daily in the evenings. It has served the same streets for decades.

Customer Review Summary

Regulars who have returned for decades most often praise the long-trusted British-Chinese menu, with crisp-skinned aromatic duck served with cucumber, spring onion and plenty of pancakes the standout. Close behind are roast pork spare ribs, tender beef in black bean sauce, the old-style curry sauce, Singapore noodles, chow mein and crispy shredded beef. Reviewers describe honest, generous portions and fast service that holds up when the shop is packed, with a friendly woman behind the counter. One mentions free prawn crackers on a bigger order. The criticism is narrower. One first-time visitor found the hot and sour soup neither hot nor sour, the roasted duck in black bean sauce tasted boiled, and the mushroom rice had little flavour, and also felt phone orders were curt and functional. Another reviewer called a delivery order tasteless, and a third objected to the minimum spend on card payments. Even so, a longtime customer says the food has been great since childhood.

“Smooth sailing all the way. Our first choice for a convenient takeaway treat. We’ve regularly returned. It’s obvious the menu is tried and trusted over decades by local fans. A complete atlas of British-Chinese cooking of 150 or so dishes. We’ve always enjoyed honest, tasty and generous portions. The crisp-skinned aromatic duck with fresh cucumber, spring onion and plenty of pancakes. Roast pork spare ribs braised until the meat surrenders in a glossy sauce, the traditional crunch of slightly springy-resistant cartilage. Thinly-sliced tender beef slippery with green pepper chunks and salty-savoury black bean sauce. Egg fried rice comes stained dark with soy sauce and with a bigger order prawn crackers are on the house. The Golden Kitchen can be packed at the obvious times and orders still fly out. But even busy, the lady behind the counter always has a friendly smile for us. We don’t want for more.”
