Quick info
About YEMEN HEAVEN
Yemen Heaven is a Middle Eastern restaurant on Walmgate in York, where the kitchen centres on Yemeni slow-cooking rather than the broader regional standard. The house special is lamb mandi, a long, slow-cooked lamb dish served with rice, and it anchors a menu that also covers sharing mezze and desserts such as Um Ali and Kunafah. A covered and heated outdoor seating area runs alongside the Middle Eastern and Yemeni decorated dining room inside, giving the place year-round tables in two distinct settings. Dogs are welcome throughout. Gluten-free options are accommodated on request. A house special strawberry Daiquiri mocktail sits on the drinks list, and background music plays across the room. The format suits both small groups and walk-ins, with the larger tables making the mezze plate a natural choice for sharing.

Diners single out the rich Yemeni flavours as the main draw, especially the slow-cooked lamb mandi, described as fall-off-the-bone and melt-in-your-mouth, alongside the Um Ali and Kunafah desserts. Close behind, several praise the warm, thoughtful service, the atmospheric covered heated outdoor seating, and the house special strawberry Daiquiri mocktail. One note mentions portion sizes felt small. Most return enthusiastically, with several suggesting booking the outdoor area for the full experience.

“We had a spectacular meal at this treasure trove of a spot. From the five-star hospitality shown by the whole team—Greg looked after us so well!—to the cozy, homey Middle Eastern decor, everything hit the spot. We came in as a big group, but nothing was ever too much trouble, and everyone at the table was thoroughly impressed by the rich Yemeni flavours. I decided to bite the bullet and try the lamb mandi despite not being a big lamb fan. I figured if anyone was going to do it right, it'd be this place. Boy, was I right. I'm converted. Superb. Fall-off-the-bone, melt-in-your-mouth, flavourful magic. Every single grain of rice was perfect, and every plate was cleared clean. The house special strawberry Daiquiri mocktail was probably the best I've ever had. I'd love to see a cardamom syrup & pomegranate molasses mocktail on the menu sometime—I bet you could take it to the next level. For desserts, we shared the Um Ali and Kunafah. Again, probably the best desserts we've ever eaten in a restaurant. I couldn't possibly recommend this place enough and we will come back.”

“We had an amazing meal here the other night. We sat in the covered heated outdoor area which was really atmospheric and looked lovely. Inside of the restaurant is not as atmospheric so book outside if you want that authentic feel. Food was delicious and service was great. We had a sharing mezze and they catered really well for my husband who is gluten free. Mains were delicious too. We will be back!”
