About Chef Peking

In Wokingham, Chef Peking is a Chinese restaurant at 426 Finchampstead Rd, serving Chinese, Malaysian and Thai dishes in a dining room finished with designer wallpaper. That mix means a table can order across three cuisines from one kitchen. The menu includes Peking-style beef, Chinese chicken curry and a Thai prawn dish. Set menus are offered, and a two-course buffet brings the dishes to the table. For guests with allergies, the team can advise which dishes contain nuts.

Customer Review Summary

The complaints recur around portion size and cost. Reviewers call mains very small and prices high, citing a Peking-style beef served on a tiny boat-shaped plate, an undersized soup bowl that led to ordering a second, and squid with oven chips and chicken curry from the takeaway that felt meagre for the price. One diner found the beef sweet despite asking about the sauce, and another described a sullen host who rushed a party of four to order.

“Lovely fresh cooked food, it’s quality is top-notch. The service is really good and they made us feel welcomed. 5 stars all round. Slightly Higher prices than other local Chinese restaurants but I didn’t mind spending the extra for the quality and lovely night we had there. Thank you Chef!”

“We were a party of 4 who went last night. Phoned them to let them know we had got lost due to road closures and would be a bit late. Arrived, taken to our table by an older man who didn't welcome us just a sullen face when he spoke to us. He barely gave us time to look at the menu before he came for our orders. We were rushed into ordering while he waited impatiently. He just seemed like we were an inconvenience. Food was good but portions for mains very small and it's not cheap for dishes. Would I go back hmm? Good question, maybe if staff were a bit more welcoming, but as someone previously said if it's the only Chinese then they have the monopoly and probably aren't bothered about customer satisfaction.”

“Went here today for the first time with my friend and his family, such good service, always asking us how we are and topping up our drinks. The food was lovely, I don’t usually leave reviews but the staff were so accommodating and helpful that I thought I would. I will be returning !! :)”

“It's quite surprising that it received such a high rating. They brought me an empty soup bowl because my husband and I were going to share the soup, but as soon as I touched the spoon, my hand was covered in oil; cooking oil was dripping from the spoon. I ordered the Peking-style beef as my main dish, and it was the smallest main dish I've ever had in my life. It came in a boat-shaped plate measuring about 10x5 cm. It could have been a side dish, and I thought they had brought the wrong thing, but it was the correct order. That wasn't the end of it. Before ordering the meal, I asked what kind of sauce it had, and they said onion beef. I specifically didn't order teriyaki sauce because I don't eat sugar. An incredibly sweet beef arrived. Incidentally, I should mention that the soup was served in the smallest bowl I've ever seen, so instead of sharing it with my husband, we ordered a second one. Besides, neither my husband nor I are people who eat large amounts of food. We went hungry and ate a tasteless meal; our Friday night dinner was ruined. I can't even give it one star.”
