About The Wheel Restaurant

The Wheel Restaurant is a student-run restaurant on New Market St in Wigan, inside the Parsons Walk Centre, where Catering & Hospitality students cook and serve every dish as part of their qualification. Experienced tutors oversee the kitchen, and the students are also trained in the etiquette of food service. Guests can watch them at work in the kitchen. The set three-course menu follows a Great British line, opening with starters like leek and potato soup, moving to mains such as fish and chips with tartare sauce and mushy peas, and finishing with desserts including sticky toffee pudding. Lunch and evening sittings run at set seating times at quarter-hour intervals. Last-minute bookings are taken, with tables arranged on the day. In the festive season, the tables are dressed for Christmas and Christmas lunches are served.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips is the dish reviewers raise most, one calling it the best they have had, with light batter and homemade tartare sauce. Close behind are the Great British set menus: leek and potato soup, prawn cocktail, scotch egg, hotpot, cheese pie and chicken tikka, plus chicken kiev and smoked mackerel rillettes. Sticky toffee pudding, trifle and seasonal crumble with homemade ice cream feature among the desserts. Reviewers call the food brilliant and not just good for college students, with generous portions and great value. The student waiters and bar staff are described as polite, friendly and attentive, and Christmas lunches left tables with nothing to fault. One reviewer wished the dining room had more tables so students could gain fuller experience, and another missed mushy peas with the fish. One group finished with tea and a homemade biscuit.

“What a lovely mid week meal out, made and served by a great bunch of talented teens supported by great college staff. The tables were dressed for christmas and service as to expect in a regular restaurant with the added bonus of being able to see the students at work in the kitchen. Our waiter was attentive and ensure all needs attended to. The bar staff ensured we were never left thirsty. The food was wonderful although I would advise just a light lunch before hand as the serving were generous! Thank you all for a lovely evening.”

“We had a great evening here. The menu was Great British which included an array of dishes including leek and potato soup, prawn cocktail and scotch egg to start, followed by fish and chips, hotpot, cheese pie and chicken tikka. Dessert of strawberry tart, trifle and sticky toffee pudding completed the meal. At £18.95 for three courses this is such great value for money too!!”

“Just had Christmas lunch here with our church family. I can honestly say it's the best one I've had for years. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff were polite and helpful. Will certainly be revisiting and can highly recommend it.”
