About Maplewood Restaurant

Maplewood Restaurant is a Chinese restaurant on Warrington Rd in Widnes, serving a Cantonese menu alongside a separate, colour-coded gluten-free menu. The team asks about dietary requirements on arrival, and gluten-free dishes are announced as they come out, so guests avoiding gluten can tell which plates are theirs. The main menu has its own vegetarian section and a choice of set menus, and a banquet option includes duck pancakes. Guests first sit at the bar to look over the menu and order, then are shown to a table. Extra soup or rice can be ordered and is left on the table. Reservations are required.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the service, describing staff for whom nothing was too much trouble and food that arrived quick and hot. Named dishes include sweet and sour chicken with salt and pepper chips and salt and pepper chicken with noodles, both called lovely. Close behind is the food, which several call delicious. One diner in a party of 20 praises a colour coded gluten free menu, with staff announcing gluten free dishes by name. The extra soup or rice left on the table is another touch reviewers like. The complaints are specific, though. One vegetarian reviewer reports being told that vegetarian dishes share oil and preparation space with meat and fish and contain oyster sauce. They also describe a replacement for the banquet's duck pancakes of unwashed lettuce and boiled vegetables that smelled foul. A longtime Sunday regular says five of them were squeezed onto a table for four on Mother's Day and will not return. Still, most say they would go again, and one happily tipped the staff.

“We were asked on arrival if we had any dietary requirements to which I told them I am vegetarian, we have been 3 or 4 times before and on all occasions I notified them I am vegetarian and clarify every time that means I don’t eat fish, meat, or anything that has been alive. This time the server told me that the items labelled vegetarian are cooked in the same oil and prepared in the same area as everything else, including fish and meat, also that they put oyster sauce in all vegetarian dishes to ‘give them flavour’, this is not noted on the menu and should anyone have a shellfish allergy could have serious consequences. The server then said that my requirements are vegan not vegetarian as vegetarians eat fish. They do not that would be a pescatarian. I then clarified that I eat eggs and dairy but no meat or fish, which is vegetarian, upon being served a meal that had to be specially requested to the chef not to be cooked or prepared near meat or fish, the server told me that my gluten free meal was ready, so I explained my meal was vegetarian not gluten free to which he said ‘oh yes vegetarian gluten free’, there doesn’t seem to be an adequate understanding from the staff of what a vegetarian is. Given they actually have a section labelled ‘vegetarian’ on the menu, they should not be cross contaminating food or putting oyster sauce in vegetarian dishes. I was also served half a head of lettuce and a plate of boiled veg that stunk, this was allegedly to replace the duck pancakes portion of the banquet, but the lettuce had clearly not been washed as it had soiled on and the boiled veg was in a sort of murky green thick liquid, and as mention above it STUNK, will not be returning”

“As soon as you walk in the door you're greeted by friendly, happy to help staff. You get to sit round the bar while you look at the menu. Once you know what you'll be having to eat the waiter takes your order and the menus. Around 5 minutes later your shown to your table and the food it shortly followed. Fantastic presentation of the cutlery and plates once they bring them over from the kitchen. We opted for sweet & sour chicken with salt & pepper chips, and salt & pepper chicken with noodles. Each dish tasted lovely and there wasn't anything bad we could say about them. The service level was excellent. Anything you needed they would sort for you without it being an issue. We spent around £105 for 2 appetisers, two mains with sides, 4 drinks and a desert. Although this is a little pricier than other places we were very much happy to pay the price due to the fantastic tasting food and the excellent service level. 100% recommend you visiting this place, easy to park, lovely experience!”
