About Trenchers

Trenchers is a seafood restaurant on New Quay Rd in Whitby, serving fish and chips in an Italian-style dining room with booths and colourful Tiffany lampshades. The fish and chips come as cod and chips or hake and chips, and a half and half option pairs chips with salad. A fish tapas platter adds Thai king prawns and Whitby scampi for those who prefer a spread of plates. Booths give parties their own seating area within the room. Dessert is a lemon and ginger cheesecake, kept in a display cabinet.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips anchor most visits, with reviewers praising crispy, light batter on haddock, hake and cod, and portions they call spot on. Close behind is the wider seafood menu: the fish tapas of Thai king prawns, fish goujons, salt and pepper squid and Whitby scampi, plus fish cakes, oysters and a pot of sausage gravy. Staff come across as welcoming and friendly, and families mention the children's meal of a drink, main and sweet. Opinions are not uniform. One diner found the chips dry and tasteless, with watered-down vinegar, and waited while they were cooked fresh to order. Others call the fish and chips nice but not memorable, even vanilla, with fast service that feels a touch robotic. A seafood salad had good dressed crab and smoked salmon, but the mussels were tasteless. A few mention queuing outside, being sent back out after walking in, and tables too small for a larger person. One suggests pre-booking to avoid the queue. One couple had two pieces of lemon and ginger cheesecake boxed to take away.

“Given all the awards, I thought I should try at least the chips as I love them fried in beef dripping. However the chips were quite dry and tasteless even with loads of vinegar on (which also seemed watered down as not much taste). Portion was a fair size for £3.50. Maybe it was a bad batch of spuds but had nicer at Royal Fishery and Terry's. Had to wait around ten minutes even though they had just opened, I kinda of expected a busy place like this to constantly have chips cooking but clearly it's fresh to order which is fine but for a busy place they just should just continuously cook.”

“1st of all I nearly walked out as when we entered the building we were told to go back outside and wait. Yet others did the same without being told. That asside the service was quick and polite the was food tasty and a reasonable portion size.no better or worse than I've had elsewhere. hardly any grease left on the plate after eating though.i had the hake and chips where the batter was nice and crispy the chips were OK but I really do like my chips blanched . I didn't like the tables and seats as a larger person wouldn't have fit at the table.i have put some photos on so you can see my meal and my partners.”

“Well.... It's definitely 5 stars - no doubt it's great fish and chips. It's very 'vanilla' though - I've had better F&C for my taste. Everything is just done really well but it's somehow not very memorable - maybe a touch robotic is the word for the food and service. Given how busy it is, maybe it has to be. If it was the only F&C in town, I'd gladly go back. It's not though, not quite good enough to stop me try somewhere else next time.”

“We recently stopped a night a Whitby and after my wife had read all the reviews we had to give it a go for ourselves, and I’m so glad we did potentially the best fish and chips we have ever had! We went there around 7pm on a Tuesday night and was greeted by the door and taken to a booth seating area where we was presented menus by Karen who I must say was a fantastic host and a credit to the company incredibly helpful and attentive, food and atmosphere was amazing can’t wait to go back!! Amazing food and value for money!”

“We love Trenchers delicious seafood freshly caught and beautifully prepared. We usually see Liam first looking after and seating the customers always a big smile ……. we visited on 26 May 2026 with my niece and her 2 children who thoroughly enjoyed their meals especially Lilly who had an ice lolly as part of her children’s meal, big brother James enjoyed a large portion of fish cakes like his Mum Sarah. I knew that Trenchers was the right place for us to lunch before we headed to the beach for sand castles & swimming in the sea. We found ourselves in Whitby again 7 September 2026 smaller table for two this time and as ever we enjoyed a delicious meal my husband Richard enjoyed his Haddock while I had King Prawns with Cod/haddock fish bites ….. oh my they were delicious😊. Evie attended to our table and nothing was too much trouble for her, bless her she also boxed 2 giant pieces of Lemon 🍋 & Ginger cheesecake (which I spied on the way passed the display cabinet) it is my absolute favourite it’s not just a good cheesecake it’s a ‘Great’ cheesecake and although I found myself pleasantly full after my fish I thought as I’d waived the chips this little treat would be well deserved later…… and it was every delicious mouthful 😊. We both thoroughly recommend a visit to Trenchers in Whitby you definitely won’t be disappointed….. delicious fresh fish prepared and served with such care and the staff are so welcoming Thank you all so much for continuing to make our visits to your restaurant so special 😊definitely 5⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐o”
