About Primrose Cafe at the Walled Garden
Primrose Cafe at the Walled Garden is a cafe in Warrington on Witherwin Ave, housed in an old lean-to greenhouse within Grappenhall Walled Garden. The setting gives visitors a glasshouse to sit in, with gardens to stroll around before or after a visit. The menu runs to a brie and chutney baguette, alongside a selection of homemade cakes. A spiced chai latte is on the drinks list for anyone who wants something other than coffee. Breakfast is served as well, and it has included a Breakfast with Santa event.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the homemade cakes, with one recommending them outright and another calling the selection nice, often enjoyed with tea or a spiced chai latte outside by the gardens. Close behind is the friendly service, described as efficient and willing to adapt, such as making a brie and chutney baguette without meat for a vegetarian. The jacket potato, golden and crispy and oozing with cheese, gets its own praise, and a Breakfast with Santa pleased a group with children. The setting in the old greenhouse by the garden wall is repeatedly called lovely. Criticism is smaller but specific. One reviewer thought the food and drinks overpriced for the portion size, and noted the inside is loud when busy and not dog friendly. Another had a poor visit with a family: an iced mocha arrived lukewarm with hardly any ice, and buttermilk pancakes never came after a long wait because the food order had not gone through. That reviewer left with a refund. Another mentions the cake being forgotten at first before it was brought over.

“Visited for the first time as a family of 4 at 11am, we were really excited as it was gorgeous weather and a beautiful setting. It was very busy, so we did expect a wait. However, we had an awful experience at Primrose Cafe at Grappenhall Gardens. We ordered buttermilk pancakes and an iced mocha. The iced mocha came out within 5 minutes, barely filled properly and with hardly any ice - still lukewarm. When we politely asked for more ice, the waiter said absolutely nothing — no acknowledgement, no friendliness, no expression whatsoever. What made things worse was waiting 45 minutes for pancakes that never even arrived. When I asked a young waitress about it, she just said “food comes out in order" - as if I didn't know how things worked. I explained that waiting 45 minutes for pancakes was ridiculous, especially when other tables were clearly being served. She went back to the kitchen, came back with no answer, and just continued serving other customers without updating us. She and other waiters were bringing out food to others. Eventually the manager came over and admitted the order never went through because drink and food tickets are apparently separate. I explained that wasn't my issue and other customers had recieved their food. The apology was slow and felt half-hearted considering the inconvenience caused. I’m currently 38 weeks pregnant and was there with a 1-year-old and 3-year-old who were both upset and restless after such a long wait. The whole experience was stressful, frustrating, and completely lacking in warmth or customer care. The staff came across cold, unfriendly, and uninterested the entire time. Ended up asking for a refund and leaving hungry. Really disappointing service.”

“The place is very charming, with a view on the garden wall and the café being in the lean to greenhouse. The service was nice and friendly. The downside is the food and drinks as it feels overpriced for the quality and portion of it. To know: the inside is not dog friendly and can be quite loud when busy.”
