Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips is what reviewers focus on, and opinion splits sharply. Positive reviewers describe fresh fish in crispy batter with chips cooked just right, and close behind come the sauces, the friendly staff and a range of white fish beyond the fried option. One family with a baby praised the sticky toffee pudding the chef recommended. A run of critical reviews says quality has slipped. Regulars who once rated the place among the country's best report fish that was smelly and mushy on their last two visits, and one says it would cost less at the pub. Others call the fish overly breaded and the fries stubby. One reviewer was told the business recently changed hands. That reviewer's delivery arrived tasteless, with overcooked fish and dry chips that felt like scraps from the bottom of the barrel, though a child's fish was the best of the order.

“Having been here several times to sit in the restaurant with my partner and dog to enjoy what is a great fish and chips it seems they have now changed their policy and are no longer dog friendly as we got turned away at the door. This is the same dog that has been in the restraint several times before with no issue with the same staff getting her water and giving her attention. A reason for this change would be great as it’s such a shame. The food has always been great so it’s sad that we will have to look for alternatives.”

“This place used to be as good a fish and chip restaurant as anywhere in the country. Unfortunately our last two visits have been really poor. Prices are really high (would cost less at the pub) and quality is poor. The fish was really smelly and mushy. Seems like it was not fresh and the cooking oil is not being changed often enough. After the last two bad experiences we won't be returning.”

“We ordered a delivery costing around £80 and, sadly, it was really disappointing. The whole meal was quite tasteless, particularly the fish and chips. My son’s fish was better than the rest of ours, but overall the fish seemed overcooked and the chips were dry, with very few decent ones — it honestly felt as though we’d been given the scraps from the bottom of the barrel. I was told the business has recently changed hands, so perhaps that explains the difference. We’ve never minded paying a little extra to order from here because the quality was always superb and worth it. Sadly, after this experience, we’d be better off ordering elsewhere. Such a shame, as it really was good while it lasted.”

“This was not a good experience. It is for body-peirced, purple haired folk. Neither the stubby fries nor the overly-breaded fish was exceptional. About 7 tables in the place, packed together. Ordered wine and have to admit it was fresh- the cook had to go to a nearby store and buy it. It was the Dollar General variety... and not the price. 'nuff said”

“Don't recommend. The fish was not tasting right. Chips are ok.”
